Meadrian, when your dog contracted coccidia, how did you treat her? Could you use the Corid or did it take a visit to the vet? I assume that the symptoms were the same as for the chickens, the bloody poop.
Thanks, everyone for all the help! Thanks 2txmedics for the website, I read it and it helped a lot. Now I understand where this came from. Although I realize that Corid is much better for this than Sulmet, I can't get to the store to get Corid before Tuesday and I have Sulmet on hand. So I...
I believe my 2 month old chicks have Coccidosis because of the sudden onset of very bloody stools I found this morning. On another thread I was advised to use Corid, which I cannot get until Tuesday, so I have begun treatment with Sulmet until I can get the Corid.
But never having dealt with...
Ok, I have 3 different coops/pens and I have locked everybody up in their pens. I have given the Sulmet with ACV to the group with the cocci and just ACV in everybody elses just for good measure.
How contagious is cocci? If my Chihuahua was playing in the same yard the chicks are in, will she...
Well, it's Saturday and, of course, everything is closed.... It will be Tuesday before I can get Corid, so should I be giving Sulmet until then or should I just keep everybody locked up until I can get Corid??
ACV=Apple Cider Vinegar. The mother is the sediment that is left which shows that the vinegar has had little processing therefore more of the "good stuff" remains. You can look for it in the specialty section of your grocery store, but more often you will find it in a health food store.
I just found the bloody poop in a small coop with young birds, but I do not have the Corid on hand. I do have Sulmet and Terra Vet (Oxytetracycline) powder. Are these good to use for cocci?
Yes, they are a bit young for special treats like you mention. I would wait till they are a week old. Although it would be good for them now if you put a small plate or something with some dirt from outside. Only if you do not use chemicals on your yard. I know as soon as the eggs hatch, mama...

That's why I don't order eggs anymore. I've heard that they get X-rayed when they go through the airports and that may kill their viability. Also, the jostling they go through, being handled and such, damages the airsac. It amazes me, though, that so many folks get good hatches from shipped eggs.
The best thing I have ever found for pain and swelling is Advil Liquigells. They work very fast, because they are liquid, and are much better than just ibuprofen as I learned when I recently sprained my ankle. They quickly eased the pain and reduced the swelling. Please give them a try.
I don't know whether to or to you, so take whichever you need. But I do you for saving her and giving her the opportunity to help you grieve and recover. I still grieve my Aveia, my beloved GSD companion of 12 yrs who died 10/22/05.

Dh and I met when I was scheduled to ride in the Phoenix Rodeo Parade on my horse and needed a way to get her there. He had just moved his horses into the same stable and had a trailer. Five months later we married. That was nearly 41 years ago.
