    New hens and laying

Update: I fixed our ramp by adding more cleats closer together, and smaller. For the most part, the girls now go in to bed, but there are a couple of stragglers I have to go put on the ramp in the evening. Two days ago we got 7 eggs, so everyone laid! We added a different feed, and started some...

    New hens and laying

We had chickens in the past, and got rid of them a while. Big mistake, I know... But we opted to start again. We purchased seven 18 month old laying hens, Golden Comets. Their previous setup was a chicken house, no outside access, with nest boxes around the perimeter of a straw floor. The flock...

    Deep litter advice

I will be closing in the holes this weekend. It was to be a tractor, but have now realized I dont quite have the space to move it without having zero backyard. So I've decided to keep it in its place.

    Deep litter advice

Hello! Last weekend my son and I made a hoop coop. We have decided to thin our flock down to about 10 birds. I would like to try the deep litter method to cut down on smell and flies. Any advice is appreciated. Also, should I leave the tarp as is, or entirely cover the hoops? It should be noted...

    Need another sexing please

Yes. He/she was labeled as a brown egg layer from rural king. 4 of those 5 turned out to be roosters. They all went outside together at the same time, but the others toes are ok. However, this one was a little sicky a couple months back.

    Roosters?

Can someone please advise if these are roosters? They do not have spurs, do not crow, and are only about 6 months old. They are mounting the other hens.. which I know should be an obvious sign. But I have never had roosters before, and they were labeled as "brown egg layers" when we purchased...

Tractor Supply - dissatisfied with chickens

I'm very happy with the cost of this feed compared to Purina Layena. About $5 cheaper per bag.

Tractor Supply - dissatisfied with chickens

Wanted to report to you all my turnaround. I changed the girls over to an all flock 18 percent protein feed from Rural King. We are making progress. I eat 2 eggs every morning. We are up to 3 eggs average, and a couple days recently with 4 daily. Some huge ones also. This with the days ever...

Tractor Supply - dissatisfied with chickens

I don't think I have an egg snatcher or a hidden nest. They have an enclosed area within our fenced backyard. No evidence of an intruder. I'm not seeing any eggs on the ground in their yard area or evidence of them eating them in the nest boxes. The combs and waddles are in great on a few, and a...

Tractor Supply - dissatisfied with chickens

I do see what you are saying, however when we chose them, we did so based on the sign saying how they were hefty layers. I'm just disappointed that after 8 months, we aren't getting any more.
