Thank you, I was thinking of trying that. We'll see if it works!

    Laying From Roost

Hi, I have a Black Australorp that has recently been going to the roost in daytime and laying from there. Most of the times the eggs end up breaking and/or getting eaten by the other hens. She was laying in the nest box until just a few weeks ago. I have chased her out when I catch her, but...

    Bullies In Roost

No, haven't trimmed her crest, but could be a good idea. The roost bullying is happening after dark, so it's not an issue of not being able to see.

    Bullies In Roost

I just moved her to the other roost bar in coop. Even though it was crowded, the hens on that roost let her stay. We used to have another Polish that was her companion, but that one died last year.

    Bullies In Roost

I have a Polish that has been bullied regularly, especially after being out of the coop a few times recovering from ailments. In the spring and summer, she would sleep in the nest box at night, because she would frequently get kicked out of the roost. Now that we are having some nights in the...

    Very thin/unformed egg shells

She laid a mostly-intact egg today (the tip was cracked) so hopefully her laying situation is improving!

    Very thin/unformed egg shells

Thanks! I started adding vitamins to her water last week. I will keep up the calcium and vitamins, and see how she does.

    Very thin/unformed egg shells

Here is a photo of an egg from today. She has never had a respiratory illness that I am aware of. I treated all my hens for worms (with Valbazen) in January. This was just a routine preventive treatment, and no actual evidence of parasites. Other than the egg situation, she seems healthy: good...

    Very thin/unformed egg shells

Thanks, she is actually at the top of the pecking order. Thin shells have been happening 3 or 4 months. Unformed shells, the last 3 weeks. The other reliable layer (an Ameraucana) has very hard shells, and is on the exact same diet.

    Very thin/unformed egg shells

Hello everyone, I have a Barred Rock (about 18 months old) that has been laying eggs with paper-thin shells for a while. More recently, the shells are not formed at all. I just find remains of a rubbery shell and contents in the coop. She free ranges, and I have been giving her oyster shell...

    Cut foot

Hello, everyone I have a hen that cut her foot following a mishap in the yard. There does not seem to be serious injury, but I want to prevent infection. I'm looking for suggestions for something topical to put on the cut. Would Neosporin work? She is currently inside, on a clean towel, in...

    Recovery diet AFTER sour crop

I know there are already several threads for treating sour crop. I am looking specifically for diet suggestions for a hen that is recovering from sour crop, and has an appetite again. I have been giving her yogurt and chopped up hard-boiled egg. Please provide any recommendations for other...

    Antibiotics Availability/Alternatives

Hello everyone I have kept Oxytetracycline antibiotic on hand in case I get any sick hens and need to protect the flock (e.g. from respiratory disease).. I was told at my feed store yesterday that poultry antibiotics can no longer be sold without prescription. My attempt to find any online...
