    Taming a Rooster?

Shardrach I agree with , we follow a Darwinian principle here. I also do not remove predators, I have lost chickens to dogs (my own) I have lost chickens to foxes and hawks. The only time I had to take corrective action was the dog and it was a failure on my part by not training them properly to...

    Taming a Rooster?

Your Roo is your Roo. I had one named Charlie, loved that little guy but he was a bastard. In his mind he was doing what roosters do so I couldn't fault him But when he fluffed up on my grandson I gave him a chance, I steeped in between them and made him back of. That night he came at me, I...

Really BAD case of Scaly Leg Mites

I believe there is a topical ivermectin but not sure. A note diatomaceous earth or any fine Sandy dust bath are our friend. Also there is an article in Hobby Farmer for essential oil coop sanitizer recipe. Still Vaseline or an acidic oil like olive are good options.

    Aggressive Rooster, Help With Decision?

I have to agree with give him some more time. Our first roo was a bit of a butt at 6-7 months. Told the misus if he didn't chill I'd have to cull him. And then suddenly he did a 360 and became the sweetest best roo till the coyote got him. Honestly were not going to get another one,but one of...

How do i get my chickens to like me

Oh hey yeah, chickens are smart. They will recognize the container you use after a few days. And if you use it for the bed time routine you better put some in the crop Every night or they will ignore you. Also your end of the bargain is you let them out on a regular basis. And their part will be...

One word, S C R A T C H. We have small plastic cup, holds maybe 6 Oz of scratch when filled to the top. We fill it about 2/3 of the way in the evening just before dark. I will shake it and then throw out some scratch. While they are scratching and pecking I set up a chair and sit with them...

natural protection for wood floor of coop??

We have a similar set up, our coop is about 3 ft of the ground. I got a super deal on exterior plywood. Now we also wanted to seal it, so I chose exterior semi flat paint w/primer latex paint. Yes I know about VOC'S but I did some research and they do evaporate for the most part and what little...

    Coop Door

1, Chickens don't care which way the door opens. 2, you do not have to let them out at dawn, you can let them out when you are ready if you planned enough space. 3, No you don't "need" a coop door but it is an added layer of security. Ever think of an automatic coop door?

Getting chickens to go in at night

After you do the week or ten days they should go up at night by themselves. Now if you want them to go up early or even at night that requires training. I started by standing by the door at dusk when they went up. After awhile I added a small bit of scratch on the cool floor. Also I called them...
