Someone help!! Never had this happen......:(

UPDATE!!!! Thank you all so much for being here for me and my first real PROBLEM since we started being duck/chicken addicts. Well, we shot and killed the raccoon with the .22. Really the only option as it already had a taste for chicken. Yes there are probably more on the property, but we...

Someone help!! Never had this happen......:(

Thank you everyone. I do have an animal trap, and I had to shoot one of my favorite chickens yesterday, and lost two more the same 24 hour period. I will have ZERO problem shooting that raccoon. My animal loving husband might not let me, in which case I guess I'll trap it and drop it off...

Someone help!! Never had this happen......:(

Good news and Worse news. Good news is, I do not appear to have any bully chickens or killer Pekins. Bad news is, lost two more chickens last night. HAS to be a raccoon, and we built the coop to be predator proof. There is hardware wire, and then that is wrapped with chicken wire all the...

Do 1 day old chick need dark at night?

I had a very experienced chicken farmer tell me that it doesn't matter about the light. They go to sleep at night regardless. When they are babies, most important is the heat!! The temperature will kill them if they are not warm enough. If you are worried about it, you can get the red light...

I think my chicks are ready for the coop. But I have questions/concerns

I actually have done it both ways. Our first batch had lights until they went into outside coop, and then just went "cold turkey" into the dark. They did used to cry at night if the light was off (I live in FL...did NOT need it for heat, our AC is currently broken!!) and so we'd turn one on for...

How many ducks can this coop support?

Yep, I agree with the above posters. I have six huge eight week old Pekins in a coop with chickens and they do just fine. They love their outside time, eating plants and bugs, and swimming in the kiddie pool, but for bedtime, they follow the chickens in. Getting ready to move them, however...

Someone help!! Never had this happen......:(

Thank you JackE....they would definitely be crowded with the huge Pekins in there with them. And, the four chickens (three now :( ) That have gotten to be good sized. The rest, 11, are still babies. Maybe 4-6 weeks old, so they'd have enough room. Thinking I will boot the ducks out...

Someone help!! Never had this happen......:(

Thank you rook....I will do that this weekend....the chickens were definitely pecking at it, just can't figure out who did the actual initial injury! They're all still so young! Not even crowing/laying yet, I mean, they're only 2 months!

    Bantam chicks, assorted....

Hi Everyone.... Finally got our Bantams, we waited and waited...they are about a month old now, I think.....And are too crowded in the brooder, so they wander all over the bedroom (spare room, thank goodness for laminate flooring) and then when you walk in they fly back into the brooder and try...

Helpppp!!! I have NO idea what happened, but we have a large hoop coop with 6 eight week old Pekin ducks, 4 eight week old chickens, 6 six week old Leghorns, and 5 four week old assorted other chickens. There is PLENTY of room for them all, as we have put in boxes and perches for roosting, etc...

    Pekin Duck Club!

More duck love this morning....I believe in my heart that every man, woman, and child...should hand feed a group of hungry ducks at least once in their lifetime. Lol! Well, 1. Ducks are always hungry and willing to try whatever treat you've got. But that frantic nibbling on your hand and...

    PEKIN DUCK CAN'T STAND

I just have to add a little story to this thread...even though (Thank Goodness!!!) your duck seems to be on the mend and getting better everyday!! I had one day when my ducklings were about maybe three weeks old? This is the time they were REALLY outgrowing their brooder. I took them out to...

    Sexing Pekin Ducks

I am SOOO glad I stumbled on this thread!! I have six 4 1/2 week old Pekins. Only four are Quackers so far, two are still Peepers. One of them I've been calling my "Weird Quacker" cause it sounds SO different from the other ducks. It sounds like a teen boy in puberty, trying to get a grown...

    Pekin Duck Club!

Just tossing in my 2 cents on ducklings....raised my six in the same brooder, a rubbermaid bin. Used chick mason jar style (plastic) feeder and waterer. Fed chick starter crumbles, occasionally used apple cider vinegar (Bragg's) in the water. By age three weeks they were standing straight up...

Can i mix chicks of different ages

Awwww!! I love how you can tell who are going to be the friendliest ones by when you go to put them back in the brooder, they don't want to get out of your hand, lol. My little tiny Bantam babies, only about 4 days old, usually do that. I think that is because my hands are warm...or maybe...

    Pekin Duck Club!

Hi Pekin Lovers!! I have found my place! haha We started with six chicks our daughter wanted. Decided, might as well get a duckling each for our littlest children, ages 6 and 10. Well, the next day, we went back and got four more of those beautiful little yellow fuzzy babies...we just HAD...

Can i mix chicks of different ages

Yep, I agree with that. Once the new hatchlings have a little growth on them, they will be fine with the older kiddos. And once they don't need heat anymore, then you won't have to worry about your older chicks getting too warm, or having to adjust to heat when they've already been off of it...
