    Tumor in eye?

I have a 1 year old Americana hen that I found roosting on her own. Brought her inside and did a quick once over. She was skinny, but I didn’t see any initial injuries. I noticed she was keeping her one eye shut this morning when I was changing her bedding. I would guess this is a tumor. It...

    Why are my chickens dying?

We don’t have any vets in the area that will even look at chickens

    Why are my chickens dying?

I have a video, but I can’t upload it on here. It is only giving me an option for pictures

    Why are my chickens dying?

I have had chickens for years, and have never dealt with anything like this! This flock is around 8 months old. I’ve had them since they were chicks. We sold our old flock to start over with younger layers. We haven’t lost a single one until a couple weeks ago. Our fist loss is unrelated to what...

    Foot mystery getting worse

It is a large coop and well ventilated. No other hens have any signs of frostbite.

    Foot mystery getting worse

The one foot that she hasn’t been putting weight on didn’t have any damage to the skin when I found her. Only thing I could see was bruising at the joints under the skin. Otherwise her foot looked normal. They have a wood roost, and are in an insulated coop with bedding.

    Foot mystery getting worse

A couple days ago I noticed a hen in my coop that wasn’t putting any weight on one of her feet. It looked like all of the joints in that foot were bruised so I thought maybe we accidentally stepped on her foot somehow. I brought her in to the basement to give her some R & R in a warm place. This...

    Jaundice comb on cockerels

The part that has me the most confused about what it can be is that it’s only the 3 cockerels. None of my other 30 something chickens show any of the same signs. We haven’t experienced a true Midwest winter yet, so I don’t think cold is a factor.

    Jaundice comb on cockerels

We are in the Midwest, and yes it’s cold. This is not frostbite. I have had chickens for 4 years and know what that looks like. We have a heated waterer in their coop so they have access to unfrozen water. As far as their feed, we ran out of chick starter a couple weeks ago. They were on it for...

    Jaundice comb on cockerels

They get Nutrena Layer pellets, mealworms once-twice a week, grit and oyster shell. None of the vets around here do anything for chickens. This picture is the one that had the most discoloration of its comb. The poo was frozen when I got a picture. I have not seen any evidence of mites.

    Jaundice comb on cockerels

I have 3 5 month old cockerels that have very light red combs with a strong yellow hew. This morning I noticed that one had watery stools. They were hatched here and raised with the rest of the flock. They free range during the day and have access to chicken feed and fresh water. They are all...

    Heart Attack?

We’re 7 weeks into raising our CX. It’s our first time with this breed of chickens. I found one this morning that didn’t get up to eat. Her skin is blueish/purple and there is a slight wheeze to her breathing. I’m thinking heart attack which I know can happen to them as they get bigger. I have...

    Free Range chicks?

I currently have our broody hen on 6 eggs that should be hatching this weekend. This will be our first time with hatching chicks. I was just wondering how successful others have been with letting their broody free range hen raise chicks the old fashioned way? I have everything I need to get...

    Same chickens, different combs

This makes sense since I got these as chicks from a large hatchery. I don’t breed my chickens so the combs don’t matter to me.

    Same chickens, different combs

These are two of my three silver laced Wyandotte. Two of them have a single comb, and one has a rose comb.

    Same chickens, different combs

I noticed this evening that one of my hens that is supposedly a silver laced Wyandotte has a single comb. She was next to another hen that is identical to her, but with a rose comb. Thoughts? Is it possible to have different comb types in a breed?

Bloody discharge. Swollen vent. Egg bound???

I have a 3 year old hen that has some slimy bloody discharge (possibly blood mixed with egg white?) coming from her vent. I believe that she is the hen that has been laying soft eggs for the past few weeks. It’s hard to tell because the eggs are so similar. She is still eating and drinking fine...

    Rooster aggression toward chicks

This was definitely not light pecking. That is what I was expecting. The rooster grabbed them by the back of the neck and was not letting go until I intervened with the first one, and until a couple chick friends came to the rescue of the second.

    Rooster aggression toward chicks

I only let them interact that one time. After he attacked the second chick, I separated them. I was surprised that he responded that way since they have been side by side for at least 8 weeks already. To the freezer he goes!
