    Raising chickens in Chicago

Hi and welcome. I’m in Pilsen raising 6 hens of my own. They hatched June 3rd but only one, the easter egger, is laying anything. She’s pumping them out like crazy, at least one a day, sometimes 2! Have fun.

    City coop and run

The PDZ is great. I scoop it out every 2-3 days and I have no smells. I'm doing "deep litter" method so I turn the pine every few days too. Hens should start laying in 2-3 weeks!

I couldn't figure out how to add pictures to my comment, but here's the link to what I posted a few months ago. I've since changed the feed and watering systems to vertical PVC tubes to save space and time. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/city-coop-and-run.1189766/

Great job. This is almost identical to my coop, but your planning is much more thorough. Honestly, it seems like we went through the same project. I had a general idea in mind, and then just got to work, from brick pavers for a base all the way to a slanted rubber roof. Whole project cost me...

    Exo Terra Stainless Steel Scooper

I was using a cheap cat litter scoop to clean up my poop board, but it often left behind pieces of poop. I searched online and came across this item on Amazon. It's originally intended to be used in small reptile terrariums, but it works really well in my coop. The mesh is fine enough to catch...

Deep litter v poop board -- what do you think?

Go ahead and do the DLM in the coop to receive the "heat" benefit. I use pine mulch and pine straw over bare earth in my covered run. It never gets muddy, and the hens do a good job of mixing it up as they search for the hand full of scratch that I toss in every few days.

Deep litter v poop board -- what do you think?

It's simple to do both. I have a poop board with PDZ, which takes care of the heavy, nightly poops, and deep litter composed of pine shavings and pine straw for the occasional poop. I scoop out the board every 2-3 days, and while I'm in there I stir up the deep litter. No smell and no hassle...

    City coop and run

Here's a shot of my recently completed coop and run for my 6 8-week old girls. The coop is 18" off the ground, 4'x4' square, 6' sloping to 5'. The run is 8'x4'. There's a poop board and two levels of roosts. I'll post more pictures if asked, but I think you get a good idea of what you can do...

Do nest boxes have to be totally separate?

I'm building a two-nest box and wonder if the divider has to completely separate the two sections, of if the partition can be half the height of the box.

Roof vent in cold weather zone?

I'm building my coop and want to be sure that it's properly vented. The coop will be 4 x 4 square, with a slopped roof from 7' - 6'; Will a roof vent be too much? I see 2 on my garage and thought one would work in the coop.

    Compost in my run

I just ordered my chicks, which are due to arrive in June. I'll start building my coop and run this week, knowing full well that it may be a couple of months until my girls can use it. My question is this: can I dump the current contents of my compost bin in the run and let it stay there so my...
