(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Hi :)
My family is new to raising chickens. My son is 17 and his friend, our neighbor, started with chickens. Patrick begged and now we have 10 since mid-May.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? We have 10 chickens and I am not sure of the breeds. I finally learned all of their names!! My husband and son, with little building experience, built a beautiful coop in our yard.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? I was researching information on once the eggs start coming. How to care for them and keep them safe for consumption.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I am a teacher so I have been off all summer. I go back to school on the 28th so my "free" time will soon end. :(

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. We are a family of 5. My husband is a Chicago Police Sergeant. Our oldest son is 26 and moving out next week. Our daughter is 20 and attends college here in Chicago. Our youngest son is 17 and a senior in HS. We have an 8yr old giant schnauzer that loves to hang out by the coop!

Hello and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us.

Here’s a link to the Articles section - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/ There you’ll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping chickens - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs.

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread#post_3239224

All the best

Hi and welcome. I’m in Pilsen raising 6 hens of my own. They hatched June 3rd but only one, the easter egger, is laying anything. She’s pumping them out like crazy, at least one a day, sometimes 2!
Have fun.
