EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

That seems very frustrating. Until today I have only lost 2 of my 12, but alas, my 3rd didn't make it past zipping. She had what looked like 1/2 yolk left, but head tucked under her wing, some blood under the inner membrane, but no movement for a solid 18 hours. (I only found the blood and yolk...

    Update on my babies

Of our 12 (I was incorrect in a previous thread where I said there were 10) eggs in our first ever batch, we have 4 healthy and happy chicks, 2 that had leg deformities, and were given to a friend with a snake, (yeah, some of y'all will be mad, but I'd rather the circle of life take them, than...

A new egg in the bunch.

Sorry for the late response. We've set up a new batch of babies. The others have 4 left in the bunch. We lost on tonight, 1 is pipped and is doing well, as I see the hole enlarging, and the other 3 show no signs, but they were candled and movement was visible. That baby egg is in the new batch...

A new egg in the bunch.

Sorry, She's a different breed, different batch from the other hens. She's never laid an egg before. Neither of the other two girls laid eggs this small, so it threw me off. Their first attempts were just wrinkly.

A new egg in the bunch.

She's the youngest, maybe 9 months. It's a completely different color than the other 2, and she was in the roost when I got out there.

A new egg in the bunch.

I think this is from the 3rd hen who hasn't been laying. Why is it so small??

    2 hens, 2 nests, 1 brood?

That's frigging amazing! How did I not think of that!!!

    2 hens, 2 nests, 1 brood?

We're away from home every weekend. They always have sufficient food and water, but no one to pick up the eggs. The last weekend we weren't home Thursday - Monday. Came home Tuesday to 3 eggs in the 2nd nest and the other 7 she was sitting on. Prior to this, the two hens would seem to switch off...

    2 hens, 2 nests, 1 brood?

So the eggs that are not being brooded, they could be ok?

First hatch and I've got a few questions.

I didn't know that. She went about a week without us collecting because we didn't know you could collect and put them all in together. I thought they'd die.

First hatch and I've got a few questions.

Set? We took them all on the same day and put them in the bator together, but they'd all been under her since they'd been hatched.

First hatch and I've got a few questions.

I didn't realized you could put off hatching like that. This is amazing! Thank you!

    2 hens, 2 nests, 1 brood?

My set up is as follows: 1 long-term coop 2 cat litter nests with ample extra roost space for the Roo and non-broody, non-laying hen 3 hens, 1 Roo. So far that I can tell, I have 2 hens laying. Both would lay their eggs in 1 of the boxes, then 1 of them would brood. When we took some eggs from...

First hatch and I've got a few questions.

You all are awesome! 1 last question, for now. How do I not do a staggered hatching? If all the eggs are laid on separate days, and I only have 2 hens laying, won't the hatch be staggered no matter what I do?

First hatch and I've got a few questions.

About the blood in the shell? Is that abnormal?

First hatch and I've got a few questions.

Thank you so much! As this is my first batch in the bator, I'm still learning. He wasn't expected today, so the brooder wasn't set up, but it is now, and the heat lamp is working. (He is wet in the picture, but I put him back in the bator while the brooder preps. He'll get a vary shallow dish of...

    Hello, from Venus, Tx

I actually have no idea what I'm hatching. My dad had Big Momma and her siblings shipped as a baby, and I don't remember what breed the rooster or other hen is. We got 3 different breeds at the same time. So whatever they are, baby is a mix. I'll definitely get pictures soon!
