    Sexing barred rock cross chicks

Thanks for the advice. They do in fact all have spots with varying sizes and definition. As for the legs, I saw a few sources suggesting that pure bred barred rock cockerel chicks will have lighter colored legs than the female chicks. Here's an example...

    Sexing barred rock cross chicks

We just had our first incubation and managed to hatch four chicks. The dad was a Plymouth Barred Rock (who unfortunately got killed by a fox the day before we started the incubation). The mothers were a variety of breeds, as we have red sex links, rhode island reds, an australorp, a barred...

Chicken just died. Heavy vomiting as it expired

Hi, I just had a two-year-old Australorp die in my arms and am wondering if I should have done anything differently or if I need to keep an eye on the rest of the flock. Yesterday I noticed that she was standing very still and hunched up (not sure if there is a term but her head was tucked in...

One of our chickens died yesterday. Looking for advice based on symptoms

One of our chickens, a three-year-old red sex link, died yesterday. This was our first loss due to sickness rather than a predator and it all happened very quickly. When I opened the run at noon to allow the chickens to free range, she was reluctant to leave the coop and then walked very...

New rollout nest design Picture heavy-edited 1/21

I just built one of these following the plans but adapting it for four nesting boxes rather than six. I also added hinges to the partition behind the nesting boxes. Our nesting boxes are difficult to access from the front due to the design of our coop so this allows us to access them from the...

Coop building plans, seeking critique and advice

Our coop design is similar to this: http://www.thegardencoop.com/large-chicken-coop-plans.html If you look at the pictures about halfway down the page you can see how easy it is to collect eggs. No more poopy shoes!

Coop building plans, seeking critique and advice

It looks like your nesting boxes are on the floor. if so you will need to bend over to collect eggs. My coop has the nesting boxes about 4' from the ground. I also have external access to the nesting boxes via a latched door so I can collect eggs without entering the run. Something to think...

Chicken Run - Roof and "snow proofing" help

One more thing (although you didn't ask) - make sure you put an apron of hardware cloth or welded wire around the exterior to keep digging predators out.

Chicken Run - Roof and "snow proofing" help

I have used the corrugated poly panels from Lowe's for roofing. I think they are 8' long. You don't need to cover the whole run (mine don't) but you need them at a slight angle to allow snow and rain to run off. Have a look at http://www.thegardencoop.com/large-chicken-coop-plans.html for...

    Caution: complacency

I have a spring and self-latching latch on the door to my run, so it swings shut unless I prop it open. I do secure it with a carabiner too, but when I sometimes forget to do this, this setup provides a little extra security.

    wry neck after predator attack

Thank you coach723. I have been adding Rooster Booster vitamin powder to the flock's water supply off and on since we noticed the wry neck. We will continue to keep an eye on her to see whether her daytime behavior is impacted.

    wry neck after predator attack

As an update, she has gotten quite a bit better. Her wound is totally feathered over and her wry neck is barely noticeable during the day. At night, however, it seems that she is having some difficulty positioning her neck and ends up with her head twisted around looking skyward and continually...

    Maggots on vent injury.

About 5 minutes at a time. In our case she had a poopy butt so I used a gloved hand to try to clear out the mess.

    Maggots on vent injury.

We went through this recently and (in addition to the advice given above by coach723) we made a saline bath by mixing salt and warm tap water and holding the chicken in it to drown the maggots. We let her air dry since it was warm and sunny but I have seen suggestions to use a blow dryer. We...

    wry neck after predator attack

I started giving Rooster Booster vitamins (powder form) in a concentrated dose via a syringe and added the normal dosage to the waterer. No change yet but I just did it for the first time yesterday evening.

    wry neck after predator attack

One of our chickens has wry neck a few weeks after a predator attack so I am wondering if I should treat it differently than normal wry neck. Our chickens were free-ranging over two weeks ago and one of them, a 1-year-old Buff Orpington, got a nasty open wound on her hip from a predator, most...
