I've heard that about roosters, but haven't experienced that problem myself. I currently have 4 roosters in with my 23 hens. 2 roosters are brothers and have always been together, one rooster I ended up getting from a neighbor who rescued it from some dogs trying to kill it. I put him in with...
I have a co-worker who buys eggs from me, because he can’t eat store bought eggs. It causes his eczema to flair up for some reason. He can only eat free range eggs.
A voice of reason. I love it.
I understand being concerned, but let’s get real. Wild chickens seem to survive without human interference, so I imagine my flock would do ok without me.
Mine won’t eat stuffing, raw carrots (but will eat them cooked), radishes.
They LOVE blueberries, Cheerios, pasta, rice, corn and pretty much everything else.
Prefer lettuce over cabbage and reluctantly eat broccoli and cauliflower.
And yes, they love meat. Pork, beef, and even chicken. They...
Ask a trusted neighbor to let them out in the morning and lock them up at night in exchange for the eggs they lay. That’s what I would do if I were to be gone for so long. If it were only one or two nights then I would risk leaving the coop door open (I have a security light over the door to...
Mine didn’t start eating food like that until they were about 4 months old. I have laying hens now that were given to me and they haven’t Yet started eating the snacks I give my girls. They just don’t know what it is.
I now have around 35 chickens and I would never consider locking them in any size building for any amount of time (even one day). Besides being cruel (in my opinion) with my luck my girls would probably take that to mean they had to stay in there all the time.
I had the same problem with mine. When I got my first three, they wouldn’t go into the coop at night. After I spent about 5 days and installing a night light over the coop door they finally started putting themselves to bed. When I upgraded the chickens coop I had the problem of convincing them...
I tried the kiddie pool, but my chickens would never wade in it. Tried the sun shade, but the wind would just tear it apart. Tried the ice, that did work, but it melted in a few hours. So, we just have over 100’ of hose running to the mister and the chickens love it. Being on a timer I don’t...
What a nice
What a nice sounding town. Our address is San Antonio, but we live in an unincorporated area 16 Highway miles outside of town. Takes 15 minutes to get to the nearest store, but love the quietness of “country” life and our 5 acres of weeds. 😀
I think that’s what hubby was planning, went online to price everything and found the kit which has everything (including the glue and hanging brackets) that was needed. Still a diy project, just without the multiple trips to the store to buy what you forgot the last time. 😀
I look at it this way:
They don't get medicated feed when born out in the wild, so why do they need it because they are penned up in my yard? I haven't lost a little one yet to any illness. But that's just my opinion.
here are a few pics of the set up. The first is basically their whole run. The posts are 10 foot 4x4’s set 2’ in the ground, 8 feet apart. The fencing is only 5’, but my daughter got me a HUGE net that covers the whole run down past the fencing, which keeps the chickens in and flying predators...
