    What is it?

I just assumed his comb was deformed and was not looking at that as a breed trait. I too, however, am a beginner. I have only had chickens for just over a year. I did a lot of googling and comparing, and the one that most closely looks like him, featherwise, is the New Hampshire Red. Could he...

    What is it?

Yes, he appears to be full size. He is larger than my hens (RIR, BO, Barred Rock, etc.) but my other rooster (also a rescue) appears to be Buff Orpington, but he is HUGE!

    What is it?

A neighbor found this rooster in a German shepherd's mouth and rescued him. Neighbor assumed it was mine and put it in my coop while I was away on vacation. He was wrong, it's not mine, but he's been there almost 2 weeks and my existing roo (twice his size) didn't kill him, so I guess he is...

    Still broody after chicks die?

Eggcellent! You are correct, I was commenting with what I have heard and not what I have tried. Next time I will use the sharpie! By the way, here is momma Speck and the two little ones.

    Still broody after chicks die?

Thank you all for the help. I will start insisting that she roost in the evenings. Should be fairly easy since Speck is not using the nesting boxes at night, I can just put Nugget on the roost and block off the boxes until morning. I tried marking them like you said, circle around the equator...

Chickens Just Wandered into My Yard.

Yeah, I can see that. I am just north of Brookshire, population around 4000 now I suppose? I guess it's not a stretch the cats dumped here could be from the small town and not the big city. I guess I always imagined big city folks driving out here to dump their unwanted pets on us country folks.

Chickens Just Wandered into My Yard.

We have also had cats dumped on us, that we cared for and now care for the offspring of, but never chickens. How close are you to the city? Country folk don't normally do stuff like that. (I'm 37 miles from downtown Houston.) That is how we obtained our Buff Orpington rooster, Colonel, though. A...

    Still broody after chicks die?

I had 2 hens go broody around the same time, one a barred rock (Speck) and one Rhode island red (Nugget). I tried to keep the number of eggs under them to 10 each but when the broody would get up to eat another hen would jump in and lay another egg. Anyway ... Speck had 2 chicks hatch and lost...

    Texas

My second Cuckoo Maran, Crusty-butt, started laying two days later. Beans took a day off yesterday but it was there this morning when I checked. Between the two so far we have 9 eggs. I have eaten one of them because I noticed a slight crack in the shell, but we are saving them up for a...

    Texas

I don't normally post a lot, but today is an exciting day. We got our first egg today! Our Cuckoo Maran, Beans, was the first of our bunch. She laid around noon today, and she is 22 weeks and one day old. BTW, I am in Brookshire, 37 miles west of Houston. Now if the other 13 hens would...

    My chickens won't go outside!

I went out to check on them after dark last night, and they were ALL on the roost, as high up as they could get. No more huddling in the corner like they have been. I am so very happy! Thank you everyone!

    My chickens won't go outside!

They do dust bathe, right next to the coop and under the ramp. They have gotten to where they spend more time outside now, especially when I am present. Y'all were right, they just needed a bit more time to get used to the environment. Some of them have left the group huddle at night too, and...

The coop. Tomorrow is cleaning day, when my nieces and nephew come over to help care for "their" Easter chicks.

The run. The western wall is shared with 5 goats. I think you can see Tina by their dumped over feed trough.

    My chickens won't go outside!

This morning they poured out of their door like they were leaning against it as I opened it. I had to leave for a few hours and they were all back inside when I got home. I expect about 6ish they will come back out. Still gonna get a few pics here soon.

    My chickens won't go outside!

I dont think so. I have seen them walk up and down it, but most of the time they just bypass it by jumping on or off at the top near the door anyway. I will post some pictures when I get a chance, tomorrow afternoon maybe.

    My chickens won't go outside!

My chickens will not go outside. I have read a couple of other threads with people having this problem, but it was usually due to cold and snow. I live in Texas, outside of Houston, and its May. Cold and snow are not a problem for me. I have 14 birds. 2 Welsummers, 2 Buff Orpingtons, 2...
