    Chicken Door on Coop

Hello All--I am building a new coop and want to put a coop door that will work for chickens, few ducks, and the guineas. Is there an appropriate size? Will the ducks use it? I am building a run off of the side of the coop and just want a small door on the coop side. My walk through door is...

Emergency!hen got mauled, Are Cloudy eyes like blind lookn=infection??

corneas heal pretty quick if it is the outside layer. If it is the inside layer it could be problematic. Play the odds and it is outside, it will probably heal without it. If you get human meds they are essentially the same. Where are you located?

Emergency!hen got mauled, Are Cloudy eyes like blind lookn=infection??

Horse Surgeon to be exact. I gave into animals a long time ago and have pretty much owned everything except the camelids. My son asked to have the chickens so I thought I would give them a try. Friend of mine told me that I wouldn't have 42 when they were older because some would die and...

Emergency!hen got mauled, Are Cloudy eyes like blind lookn=infection??

You may have trouble finding it, but try feed store like Tractor Supply. It is a prescription product so you may have to go to a vet. No worries, I just sent you a bill for the veterinary consult. Just kidding! Good luck.

Emergency!hen got mauled, Are Cloudy eyes like blind lookn=infection??

Cloudy eyes are indicative of corneal trauma. Usually corneal ulcer, but could be blunt force trauma. The cornea is about 10 cell layers thick with one layer on the outside and one on the inside which keep it clear. If the outer or inner layer get damaged, water from within or outside of the...

Can't keep our coop, and could use some tractor ideas. :(

A few years ago, my wife and I actually fought the county over something that was not written into ordinance regarding pet rabbits. We had pet rabbits that our children showed. A neighbor told the county that we were running a breeding and production operation so the county said we were...

    16x16 Coop/Barn ... Need Ventilation Ideas!!!!

Is there a ridge vent in the roof. You said attic, is it sealed from the bottom. If so a ridge vent won't work. You need fresh air in the bottom and hot air to escape high. Ammonia is heavier so you need the lower air to move it upward. Looks like you have enough windows I would just add...

    Was this from mites?

Sorry, I am a vet and I speak like one. Superficial dermatitis is just superficial inflammation of the skin. It is most commonly caused by trauma and then subsequent bacterial colonization and infection. It is nothing to worry about. Most topical antibiotics will treat it. I like triple...

    Was this from mites?

Without a skin scraping you can not tell if it is parasitic, but I will tell you looking at it in 2-D it is not parasitic. It does look like you have superficial dermatitis and probable infection. Go buy a generic triple antibiotic ointment and apply 2 times daily. Good luck...

    Was this from mites?

I don't know much about chicken diseases. Is it moist? Is there exudate? It almost looks circular in the picture. Is it? There are common indications of inflammation (red, exudate, edema) If it was parasitic, I would think it would not be so perfectly shaped. Just my thought. I would be...

Anyone else opting for the poop-fall-through method?

I saw a youtube video of someone who put plastic totes underneath the roost and then dumped the totes every week or so. Used them instead of poop boards. I thought that was a great idea.

Incredibly stupid question about a brooder

I used a heating pad as an experiment and it did not get the overall temperature increase that the brooder light did. I used a swine heating pad that is used in farrowing crates for piglets. I did however use it underneath my brooder (plastic stock tank) to take the chill out of the concrete...

    Iron in water?????

The more I think about this, it really is extremely hard to overdose a domestic animal on iron. Even on iron supplementation! The body only absorbs iron when it needs it. The body has a compound called ferritin that tells the body that it needs to not absorb or absorb iron. In cases of...

    Help identifying dead chicks

I wondered the same thing about the lighter one. I was trying to add up buff brahmas, (I ordered 4, boy I should have ordered more, did not know the wife's favorite) and could only count 2. I wonder if they substituted for light brahmas.

    Iron in water?????

I can not think of a reason to not add vitamins to water containing iron. Almost all well water has high levels of iron. I have always added vitamins to my water and the red along all of my water fixtures indicates I have a lot of iron and I have never had a problem.

    Help identifying dead chicks

Oh I am not worried about a few losses. There is a reason they ship 5 extra. These two as well as about 2-3 more look pretty small and fragile. I am sure I will lose the other couple. They all drank and have eaten, but they just don't get around as aggresively as the others. I will pull out...

    Help identifying dead chicks

These are the two. They both have feathered feet, I know there are a few crested that have feathered feet. I am really confused. I think the darker one is a buff brahma, but the other one looks like a light brahma as well. doesn't really have the top hat like the other top hats. Give me...
