    Is this broody box sufficient?

Fun as that sounds, my family wouldn’t have it. Since we got chickens last year there’s been a LOT of drama with our little flock involving chicken (and duck) math. My parents put an ultimatum on it. Plus, we don’t have any roosters... no fertile eggs.

    Is this broody box sufficient?

We put food and water in with her when she’s in there. Taller I can do. Does she need to be kept in a separate place from the others?

    Is this broody box sufficient?

Yes, currently the top is a piece of 2x3 inch wire fencing. I’m not sure if we have any of the smaller stuff around. We’ve been bending it over the edges of the box and she hasn’t tried to escape. But it’s definitely pretty weak; I’ll see what I can do to improve it. How much higher should we...

    Mice and Squirrel Problems

Seeing as we live in a suburban housing development with other people's yards and houses on three sides of us and have less than a quarter of an acre of land, I would definitely classify us as in an area where we cannot safely shoot a gun haha.

    Mice and Squirrel Problems

Thanks for all the advice everyone!!! We would rather not get a cat, and we don't own any firearms, not even a BB gun, and none of us has ever fired one before so I don't know how long/how much practice it would take before we could actually hit a squirrel with one, haha. :D

    Mice and Squirrel Problems

Now that the weather is cooling down, we are starting to notice that not only are we feeding chickens and ducks, but we are also feeding the neighborhood mice and squirrels. We have two chickens and three ducks, and we have their food in metal drainpipe pieces attached to the fence, with a...

    Quarantine MISTAKE!!! Advice needed.

Yep, so the newbies have definitely been exposed to whatever dead chicken had. We cleaned the coop out really well, but you can't change the dirt they've been pecking on. Nothing we can do about it now, though. Crossing my fingers and saying a prayer. Thanks for the advice Hen Pen Jam!

    Quarantine MISTAKE!!! Advice needed.

Seeing as our entire "flock" consists of one bird and three ducks which I am going to count as a separate entity for the purposes of this post, I think we are going to attempt a very imperfect quarantine and cross our fingers. We fenced off an area of the run with a separate entrance, going to...

    Quarantine MISTAKE!!! Advice needed.

We just acquired two new birds yesterday. Being the silly novice chicken owners that we are, we were not at all prepared to quarantine them properly. Our current "flock" consists of one chicken and three ducks. (We had another chicken that died of illness unspecified last week.) When we got the...

Can you give human (or dog) antibiotics to chickens?

We have a pullet who has been sick for a while with what we think is a respiratory infection. She stopped making noise about a month ago, and started craning her head forward with her beak open a lot, which kind of looks like she's struggling to breathe. She has a good appetite though, and is...

How to get rid of lice eggs on chicken?

Just dusted them lightly with Permethrin and the coop as well. Planning on doing a thorough deep cleaning and dusting of the coop tomorrow. Might have been a little light on the dust but I'll check over the next couple of days and do it again if needed.

How to get rid of lice eggs on chicken?

On closer examination she definitely has little lice crawling around and a few eggs around her vent as well. We are going to get some de-lousing dust today or tomorrow. The other chicken also has a few, but not as many. We should clean out their coop really well I imagine? And how exactly does...

How to get rid of lice eggs on chicken?

We have a pullet who I noticed today that the feathers under her beak and chin are encrusted with tiny white dots. Tried to pick them off or wash with water and mild soap but that did nothing. I've noticed that this area has has this funny texture for a while, but today is the first time I've...
