    Food Scraps?

Leafy greens, grains and bread and nothing with added salt and some fruit. No potatoes, just to be safe.

To wash or not to wash...eggs

I gather them up and let them sit on the counter until the evening when they get to room temperature. I then wash them in warm water with a little mild hand soap. I don't use a brush or anything; I just rub them with my hands under the running water. I then put them on a paper towel to dry...

    Method for euthanizing chickens

I had to euthanize one of my birds recently. I found a method here on the BYC forum and thought I'd share my experiences. I read somewhere on the BYC forum that you could use ether to euthanize a chicken. I had to euthanize a bird so I thought I'd try that. Our chickens are pets more than...

There's a good feed store in Gilbert, AZ

I wanted to try Nutrena laying crumbles for my birds and Cactus Feeds on Gilbert and Ray has it. They've got other stuff too. I haven't had any experience with Nutrena, so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm half-way through a bag of the Wal-Mart layer formula...the girls seem to like it, but they...

    I'm in Gilbert, AZ

Hi All, Well, my wife and I have 3 Australorps; Olivia, Matilda, and Adelaide. They're about 8 months old now. I've got them in a small ark (Let them out during the day). I'm in an HOA, but 'pets' are OK and they are legal in our town.

    Tour de coop

We went yesterday and had a great time meeting some good people. I was inspired by some of the solutions they came up with. Two things that impressed us the most were the small, urban coops and one lady who had entered her pets in the state fair and won lots of blue ribbons! I think I'm going to...

    Australorp laying outside

I'll try the golf ball thing. I can't really lock them up in the coop--it's really the 'loft' in an ark and it's just too small and hot up there. I already have a fan blowing up into the loft, but they just can't stay up there for extended periods. It's been in the 110's the last few days.

    Australorp laying outside

I've got three australorps that started laying recently. One of them is laying outside instead of their nesting box. The other two don't seem to have a problem. I thought the coop was too hot (I'm in AZ) so I put a shade over the coop, but she's still laying outside. Any suggestions on how to...

pullets won't go in coop at night

They went up tonight! I coaxed them into the coop earlier today with some bread. When it got dark, they made their way up into the loft. The're big girls now!

poll: are you legal or an outlaw?

Legal--HOA says I can have "Pets" but not "Livestock". I only have pet chickens, so I'm cool! City says I can have up to 25.

pullets won't go in coop at night

It's got cleat's on it every few inches. I'll try some carpet. Maybe a soft terry cloth towel might work? Thanks guys!

pullets won't go in coop at night

Hi All, Well, yesterday was moving day for my 5-6 week old Australorp Pullets. I put them in their Ark (A-frame with coop on top with a ramp to the run on the bottom). I had to put them in the top through the nesting box, as they seem to be afraid of the ramp. I had to do the same thing...

    Chick waterer with Farmtek Nipples

Here's a couple of pics of a chick waterer I made using a Farmtek poultry nipple and a Ziploc screw-top food container. I used the nipple that has a rubber seal on it. The Farmtek catalog says to use an 11/32" drill. The plastic on the container is brittle, so I had to start with a very small...

Will my 5.5' fence keep my Australorps in?

Killed a chicken? Man, your neighbor has some unresolved issues. I'm very sorry about your loss. It's sad that there are dudes with that kind of anger running around. Quote:

Here's my brooder and chicks in AZ

Here's a few pics of my three Astralorp pullets in there new home here in the SouthEast valley of the Phoenix Metro area. Their brooder fits nicely in our garage, and I'm using that silvery bubble wrap stuff as an insulator for covering them up when it's cold. I bought the ark online. It's made...

Will my 5.5' fence keep my Australorps in?

Hi all, Just getting started for the first time with 3 australorp pullets. They're still in the brooder, so I'm planning my yard now. I've got a small side yard I can fence in (there's a pool in the back, so I want to keep them away from that). Will a 5.5' fence keep them in? I don't have a...

Hi All, Well, I took the plunge and got 3 Australorp pullets from a Pet Store in the West Valley (of the PHX metro area). They are Adelaide, Matilda, and Olivia. I'm in an HOA, so I guess I'm kind of an 'outlaw' (however, the town is cool with chickens, so I'm good there). I'm hesitant to...
