I agree. I don't feel like I should have to invest extra money to fence in my yard. We have a pretty small yard as it is, but it would also make our yard a bit smaller. And, somehow, we manage to keep our pets on our own property.
I have six pekin eggs in an incubator. I candled last night and noticed what looked like small cracks on the shell of one of them. I moved it to the side so I can examine it closer in the daylight. This morning, I see that is visible in the sunlight. It doesn't look like it's cracked, but...
Thank you!
It's gotten large/red in the past few weeks, so maybe around 10- 12 weeks? But we noticed differences in his compared to our 3 other chicks as early as 6 weeks. My husband was convinced at that point it was male. I wasn't sure as this is our first year having chickens and each...
Animal control won't get involved where we live. Today, we did call and report it to the police, though. On hindsight, we should have the last time as well, but my husband wanted to be 'neighborly'.
An electric fence isn't practical for us. We have a small yard and kids. We've reinforced our pens after a dog broke into the duck area. However, they (dogs) are still trying. Today was the first time since the chickens have been outside. They got so riled up, that one of them got injured...
We are on our second year of having backyard poultry. We started with a few ducks last year and got a few chickens this year. We had our third incident with neighborhood dogs today. The first time, we talked to the owner and haven't had a problem since. The last couple of times, it was...
Good point. I can't watch them all day, but it appears she's only leaving the nest a couple times a day to bath/eat/drink. That's when he goes after her. I'm wondering if I should add a wire partition to their pen so they are 'together', but he can't try to mount her? Sorry, I'm new to this...
What about supervised? Let them mate once a day or so? I think our plan is to separate completely at least until we find out if we're getting new ducklings. We're only on day 4 of both the incubator eggs and our female nesting.
Hello :) I've been reading these forums for about a year now and decided to finally join. We started out with 4 pekin ducks last year (3 females, 1 male). We lost one female several months ago to a neighborhood dog (we no longer let them free range unattended). A few weeks ago, we lost...
