    Marek’s vaccine dilemma

This weekend I lost a hen to what I now suspect was Mareks. She was an older hen and had recently had a run in with a hawk but only lost a few feathers. A few weeks after, she was lame and when I picked her up to check her foot/leg, I noticed she was emaciated. I immediately separated her and...

    Moldy eggshell?

I just went and candled the one she laid yesterday. It is not moldy looking yet, but there is a distinct line around the shell at the end where the mold (if that’s what it is) usually occurs. I will mark the lay date on the eggshell and see how long before the mold occurs. The eggs look fine...

    Moldy eggshell?

yes it is thinner. I hadn’t noticed that before, but when I just checked the one from yesterday, it’s paper thin in that area, not moldy looking yet though. They have access to both layer feed and flock raiser as well as free choice oyster shell.

    Moldy eggshell?

It develops over a few days, not sure how long it takes. The shells do feel rough in that area too.

    Moldy eggshell?

I have a 4 y.o. Easter Egger hen that lays light brown eggs that often develop what looks like mold on the bottom side, the inside looks fine when cracked open. She’s done this the last few years. I collect the eggs daily and put them straight in the refrigerator without washing. No other hens...

Neighbors' Pesky Dogs and Invisible Fence

Maybe ask the neighbor if they would consider putting up an actual fence that you would help pay for or help construct. Thats what my neighbor and I did and it has worked well. We used wooden posts, horse wire and put boards on top and bottom. It’s a nice looking fence that doesn’t block...

    How to splint a toe

No I did not. No one really gave me info on how to and said she was probably fine just to leave it as is. She is running around, roosting and doesn’t seem to be in any pain. I would like to know the procedure, for future reference though. I used the site search but didn’t find much info. Thanks

    Chick with broken toe

Thanks. She was hatched here by a broody that rejected her and the others at hatching. I was able to save these two and kept them inside for the first week and a half. I didn’t notice any bent toes at that time. They’ve been out in the big coop for the last week or two in fairly deep...

My Meyer lemon is planted on the south side of my house. It is 12-15 years old. I kept it in a large pot the first 4 years and moved it in and out of my barn in the winter. I keep it pruned to about 5-6’ tall and wide. I get over 200 lemons each year. We don’t have snow often, but it doesn’t...
