Thank you! He is pretty... and rotten (came close to a spa date with some carrots, and I have never culled one...), but he has come around. If he can play nicely (esp. with my kids), he can stay. I'm crazy about my silkies, but my Easter Eggers are pretty special too!
I second what sylviethecochin said.... I have several partridge girl Easter eggers. Marigold is definitely a girl. Bunny is more questionable.... Red across the wings can indicate roo (or inconsistent color pattern). Additionally, I have a a beautiful roo that looked just like bunny in color...
We have way too many roosters....7 or so... Mostly silkies and a dominant Easter egger. So far everyone gets along, have an established pecking order. One hen is missing some feathers (but is a frizzle and weak feathered, and we are separating her...)They really get along well, and roosters...
I'm new to chicken illness, but I know Mareks can take different forms... Mine didn't have Mareks, but for clarification, the symptoms I saw were: chicken #1, petite, young, silky pullet - quick onset paralysis (was trying to move legs, but they were barely moving and she was unable to get up...
Aspergillosis... Wasn't as hard to find as I thought... Report was in my e-mail, not hard copy. In our case, it seemed to be caused by moldy feed... Growing up, our animal feed (mainly horse feed) was stored in a chest freezer (pretty predator-proof, as we had previously had raccoons getting...
Can't remember the name... It was in the report, but since they said it wasn't contagious and we were reasonably sure of the source I didn't commit to memory... Was just so relieved that everything was ok with the rest of the chickens! If you need the name, I can try to find it. It is in a...
Oh, and a regular vet is usually a waste of time and money (not all, but many - definitely call ahead for specifics on what they will do for you and prices...) State vet, actual poultry vet are much better options... I spent lots of time on the phone with vets and most were clueless... Several...
So sorry you are going through this. We had a scare this summer... Bird with paralysis died (rather quickly). Was sent for necropsy, and another bird went down while we were waiting for results... For her it was much slower, but I was "sure" it was a bad strain of Mareks, was going to have to...
In young birds it is pretty impossible to tell... In birds the same age, obviously bigger combs - boys, crest rounder in girls (usually...), If a few stray feathers sticking out of crest would be suspicious of boy (but as new feathers come in, it can be tricky)... In younger birds, a big...
I didn't really read your post well... I didn't look close at the fact that there were 2 whites.... The top one looks cockerel to me... The bottom one has a more rounded crest, but the comb is a little big... Not as big as the top one, though... That one I would say could go either way. With...
I thought I was running "rooster rescue" over here with 9 roos (of 24 total with quite a few purchased as adults or known pullets to help my numbers... ). Good luck with those numbers! The only good thing is that roosters are awesome! So much more personality than the girls... But no matter...
Ha! Western Washington is about as far as can be from us and stay in Continental US.... We're in NC... I'll definitely look a little harder for 4-H... I'm sure the kids would have a blast!
That is adorable! I may play around with those a bit. We may at some point dabble in some shows, but they are mostly pretty little pets and egg layers, so as long as I keep good records, so I know where little lavender alleles are/ could be hiding.... If we get serious, we will definitely have...
No chicken will fare well next to large predators, though I think the question was more about whether some might have a better chance than others... I feel your pain with regards to dogs... Have an unneuterd male put bull "free ranging" next door and on my property. Haven't lost anyone yet...
One of my young Easter Eggers flies quite well (onto the barn roof), and I have seen her fly a good distance in a straight line 50+ feet, maybe 75... Most of my others fly up to roost on something (not the roof...), but tend to run if afraid. Of course, my little silkies just bounce around a bit...
