Hoping that this is a pullet (darker than examples of cockerels shown) but the pink wattle at this early age is scaring me.
Anyone have a guess?

I just moved my 4 week old chicks into their coop where they'll drink from a traditional hanging waterer for the next few days. The issue is that they've been drinking from nothing but a poultry nipple for their entire lives to this point. In a few days when I let them into the run...
PS: I put a Sharpee line at the water level so I can see if it goes down as they drink but it's warm and water could also just evaporate I'd assume.

My chicks used poultry nipples from the day after they hatched and haven't used any other waterer. It took them a few minutes to figure it out but not much longer than that.

I have a similar question - I've been using contractor sand as chick grit and am wondering when to go to actual poultry grit (or if I'll need to). I give them grass clippings to eat in the brooder which they love so they need the sand. Eventually I'm assuming they'll need something larger like...
