    Flock/Life Journey's 2019

Hey everyone!! Hopefully I can still join in? :) My name's Emily, and I'm from Virginia. I have 14 birds total in the flock--12 hens, 2 roosters. I also have 2 wonderful cats and a tank full of various fish and snails. This is my one of my beautiful Orpington hens, Biscuit, who loves cuddles...

Multiple Impacted Crops? Help with treatment/cause

Thank you so much for your help! I'll get a bag of grit tomorrow and give it to the other girls--should I give some to Biscuit as well or just begin treating her (withholding food, giving water, etc.) if her crop is still large tomorrow? I'll definitely go ahead and get a dewormer just in case...

Multiple Impacted Crops? Help with treatment/cause

I agree, it's strange that two hens have had issues so close in time to one another when I've never had a problem with it before... I have never wormed them but I read about putting garlic in their water as a natural dewormer. I've only ever treated them for mites. They have access to ground...

Multiple Impacted Crops? Help with treatment/cause

More info in case it helps: Both hens went into a molt right before the crop issues started. They were the last two to molt out of everyone in the flock. My RIR hadn't grown all of her feathers back in when she died, but Biscuit is all feathered out and beautiful again. There were a lot of...

Multiple Impacted Crops? Help with treatment/cause

They do have access to ground oyster shell, but not granite grit--I can pick some of that up. I'll try to get a video of her tomorrow. I've never seen her move her neck like this before, it's very jerky and it does look like she's trying to adjust or move the crop. I assumed that an internal...

Multiple Impacted Crops? Help with treatment/cause

Hi all. One of my Orpington hens, Biscuit, seems to be exhibiting symptoms of what looks to me like an impacted crop. She is rotating her neck in a circular motion, and her crop is absolutely massive and very firm. She and the other flock members do not regularly eat grass (they have a big run...

    Andalusian & Silver Phoenix Chicks

Update! The chicks are now 11 weeks old. The silver phoenix is, as predicted, a gorgeous cockerel (pictured rolling in the dust here), and I’m still optimistic about the blue Andalusian being a pullet. She (?) has grown quite a bit but her wattles and comb are still very small. Thoughts?

    Andalusian & Silver Phoenix Chicks

After reading everyone's comments and doing a bit of research, I think it's official that the silver phoenix is a cockerel. I'm not too upset honestly since they are gorgeous birds. However, now I'm seriously hoping for the Andalusian to be a pullet--I can't take on another rooster. Thoughts...

    Andalusian & Silver Phoenix Chicks

That's what I figured. The Phoenix's comb is also a lot redder than the Andalusian's.

    Andalusian & Silver Phoenix Chicks

Hi all! I let my broody hatch a few chicks, and they are now a little over one month old. One is a Blue Andalusian, the other is Silver Phoenix. I am hoping for two hens... Opinions on gender?

    Mystery Chick!! Help ID

Update! It has been two weeks since the chicks hatched, and I am fairly certain that the chick (now named Bluebell) is an Andalusian. I contacted the breeder who gave the eggs to me, and he said it was likely a mixup, because there were a few Andalusians caged at the fair by his birds...

    Fair Eggs--Will they hatch?

One week since hatching, and the chicks are doing very well! Their names are Bluebell and Buttercup, and I’m hoping they’re both “she”s. ;) Buttercup is the Silver Phoenix, but Bluebell was a mystery chicken at first. She didn’t match any of the labels on the eggs! Turns out she’s actually an...

    Mystery Chick!! Help ID

It almost looks like an Andalusian to me, so maybe mislabeling is the culprit here? Though I can't be sure. It is much too dark to be any of the breeds I was told, especially with the dark gray feet.

    Mystery Chick!! Help ID

UPDATE: I dug around and found part of an egg that was very, very small. I believe it was the one marked Silver Spangled Hamburg, but this chick does not look like an SSH. I'm thinking it probably hatched from that one since the Silver Phoenix egg was quite a bit larger, if I remember correctly...
