Still pretty young - about 6 months. he’s been crowing for a couple months and was the first Roo to start crowing and mating. He’s been persistently trying to mate for over a week now.
I have a Polish Crested rooster who recently had begun attempting to mate with our hens. I say attempt, because the vast majority of copulations are unsuccessful, even if the hen had the squat response and he manages to mount. It seems like he can’t keep his balance very well and usually “misses...
I have a chicken who is showing symptoms of wry neck - difficulty keeping head raised, neck often assuming a twisted appearing posture or tucked downward, but she can move a bit and occasional has brief periods of greater neck mobility and stability. From what I've read, wry neck is a symptom...
Hi everyone, I live near Sacramento CA, so the winters are chilly and sometimes very wet, but no snow. I usually rake up poop every week or so when it's dry, but it's not feasible when it's muddy. To avoid getting a muddy poopy mess in the chicken run, I usually throw piles of dried leaves back...
Got the necropsy results! Missed them in my inbox somehow last month, but I called and got them re-sent. I'm attaching the medical report for anyone interested. I'm not a vet and the report is pretty jargony, but it appears she had an infection in her reproductive tract - swollen fallopian...
Thanks so much for your help!!! She does get layer feed and I occasionally crush eggshells and give them back to them - I'll have to do this more often!
Thanks - I'll look into that!
The more I read about prolapses it doesn't look or seem like that, and seems more and more likely an egg thing. I was just concerned about pulling out an organ or something, but it doesn't seem like there's anything there in chicken anatomy that looks like that...
My ~17 month Golden laced Wyandotte took a quick downhill turn today - was fine this afternoon then this evening wasn't roosting, and was extremely lethargic (she usually wakes up and jumps down when I go to put them up at night). She wouldn't walk, and kept falling asleep. She appeared to...
Thanks! I used all our fallen leaves for the last few months which has worked really nicely, but they are starting to break down and become muddy/poopy too.
Debating between trying to find more leaves or wood chips.
I'm looking to lay out some wood chips or mulch in the chicken's yard OUTSIDE the coop to help deal with mud during the rainy season. I understand that some wood chips are not good to use inside the coop due to oils/fumes, but what about on the ground outside? Should I be worried about them...
I just noticed this on my buff orpington as well. It has gotten a bit colder recently (but California cold, so like 50 degrees), and she is also going through a partial molt which could indicate hormones. Otherwise her behavior is normal.
Ah, nice! We have one barred rock in our flock and we love her...she's our alpha bird even though she's one of the smallest, and has by far the biggest personality :P
I don't have a rooster, but I have seen the two most dominant hens mount our most subordinate hen. This chicken is fairly high ranked though (probably #3 of 7), and I haven't seen any of them mount her.
Hi Everyone,
My buff orpington, 'Tall', has had weird wavy/stringy looking saddle feathers pretty much since she reached maturity (so several months now). She seems in good health otherwise, and is regularly laying eggs. Is this normal for this beed? Or possibly indicative of some...
