Thank you for this, it helped alot with how a was treating her . . . I had actually come to assume we now had an indoor chicken, so I set up a dog crate for her with sand and suddenly she started eating in her own, then finally drinking, and within a couple of days she was trying to got out into...

    Hawk scratched up eye lids

Thank you everyone for your advice! Mary Anne has been back out with the others for quite a few weeks at this point . She has one foggy eye and seems to be blind in it. She gets completely lost when there is snow everywhere, I don't know if it's too bright or if she doesn't have any depth of...

    Bedding preferences

Thanks!! I agree the dust in the sand is crazy, especially after they have kicked it up . I didn't think of that. What about hemp? Alot of stuff I'm reading says it's easier to compost. . .

    Bedding preferences

Hi, I am planning in building a new coop this spring, but I can't decide on the type of bedding to use .. . I have sand in my run right now and it makes clean up a cinch, but I like the idea of the deep litter method for extra warmth in the winter ( I live in New England).. . I'm curious what...

    Hawk scratched up eye lids

I've been giving her electrolytes in water. ANd yogurt. Today I mixed it with some yolk. She'll eat for a little while, but now that I'm thinking brain injury I'm worried about overstimulation. Thank you!!! She seems a little better every few hours, so maybe by tomorrow shell be all set.

    Hawk scratched up eye lids

Her eyes have been opening and she reacts to sounds, but she is barely walking, isn't eating on her own and still keeps her eyes closed most of the time. When she does open them it seems like she can see something, I don't know how well yet. The concerning thing is her head slowly moves when it...

    Hawk scratched up eye lids

It goes right to the eye. That's why I'm not sure if her eyes are injured. She stopped bleeding quickly, but I'm not sure how deep it is. Thank you, again!

    Hawk scratched up eye lids

So, this morning one of my girls was attacked by a hawk. Somehow she didn't get any other injuries than getting her eyelids scratched a bit. That said, I can't tell if she can see. She went into shock, but seems to have come out of it. One eye has a cut on the lower lid and she has been keeping...

Leghorns -19 weeks to first eggs

They get layer feed, but free range most of the time and I have shells available all the time. Even spread them out a bit. . . Any suggestions for us?

    Our chickens are messy eaters...suggestions?

Are they picking out their favorite stuff and leaving the rest? Mine do that sometimes, not sure if another feeder would help if that's what they are doing. I am still new to all this though.

Leghorns -19 weeks to first eggs

I have just 2 chickens. A Cochin, who is about 27 weeks and not even red yet. And a large white chicken, maybe a white rock, not sure, she is 23 weeks. Still no eggs! Chickoletta, the white one, is getting close, but still not quite there. It's driving us all crazy! Lol. I have shavings in...

    Adding an abandoned chicken

That's what I think too, which would mean she had antibiotics and might not have anything. There were a couple of people who offered as well.

    Adding an abandoned chicken

Today I helped animal control catch a loose chicken on the side of a busy road. . . I am no chicken expert! My husband and I are debating on whether we should adopt her. She looks to be 2-4 years old. Her beak in cut, wing feathers are cut on one side, and she is super thin. We could see her...

    stress

I only have two chickens and when either of them is out of sight of the other they freak out. I hope to add another 2 this fall, but I need to build my covered run first. Craigslist is a great place to find chickens, there are also a few threads on here. Good luck.

    Hen or Roo??

This made me lol. . . My 6 year old was able to catch my two anytime when they were little, but as they have gotten bigger they have become more aware if her. They aren't laying yet, but I did read somewhere, not sure if it's true, that they will calm a little once laying. We will see. I have...
