roo or no roo for hatching eggs?

Yes, you need a roo if you want the eggs to be fertilized, and be able to hatch.

    Any artists out there?

Hi everyone! I made this little drawing of my three coturnix quail. I wanted to make it my BYC signature haha. If anyone would message me their pet pictures I'd love to do a few more for fun 😁

    Scared coturnix quail hen

That's probably why she's so scared, I don't think there is much else to do. Hopefully, she realizes not all roos are so mean.

    Scared coturnix quail hen

Its worth a shot. Shes probably a little traumatized. I had an issue where my females didn't like one of the males, so he slept on top of their nest box for weeks  Now they are totally fine with each other after I separated the male for a while. He was put in a separate cage where he...

    Scared coturnix quail hen

Do they have anywhere to hide/ get out of the male's line of sight? Branches, hidey house etc.? If she feels more comfortable and has somewhere to get away, she might warm up to him with time.

    Clipping wings?

It won't prevent them from hitting their head in a cage if they jump that's for sure. Mine cleared a 1 ft tall wall without even opening her wings. You could clip one side as a precaution so they don't fly away if they get out, but I'm not sure how you expect to keep predators without an...

    New Quail Coop!!

This winter was super rainy and cold, and our aviary roof would leak. We lost two out of five quail because of it. :( So... After we tore down the old aviary, I designed a new coop/ cage and asked my brother to build it for me. He did an amazing job!! I'm so happy that the remaining three will...

    Coturnix in Winter

Thanks for the reply! We only have them as pets and for eggs and I don't think I'll be getting any more after them, my parents are already planning a shed in place of their coop!:hitThey have been laying for two summers now, so I expect even after winter they will be slowing down. I didn't hatch...

    Coturnix in Winter

I have five coturnix quail living outside, on the ground in a coop type situation. I got them last spring so this is there second winter. Last year I didn't have any problems through the winter except for their water freezing. We cover the mesh walls with clear plastic wrap, they have a wooden...

Omg seeing quails fly nearly had a heart attack 😂😂

They are crazy... once, one of my females got out and flew right over our 5 feet tall fence gate. We got her back though!

Will Quail go into their “coop” at night?

Im sure they will be fine! When they do get cold they will go inside :) ... Mine made it through the winter ( -5-10 at night a few times) out in their aviary with a box full of hay and plastic sheets stapled up on the chicken wire walls to keep out the drafts..

    Injured Bird

He was bleeding from around his head/ neck but we cant see any wounds. Good news is he seems to be OK now. Probably bonked his head really hard on a window as he was unresponsive for a good few hours. He is eating, drinking and seems very alert. We will try releasing him in an hour or so. As...

    Injured Bird

Hello I am unsure where to post this but my parents just found a bird (Dark-eyed Junco) on the road as they were on a walk. It is injured and was probably attacked by a cat or hit by a car ( though I don't know how such a little bird could survive that) Due to the current coronavirus situation...

    Wounded head on male Coturnix

He will probably grow his feathers back over time. My females have all grown their feathers back after our male plucked a few off.

    House Trained Quail

Untrue! I am not sure if quail, in particular, can be potty trained as they aren't the brightest birds, but many parrots can be trained to go to the bathroom in a certain area!

    Canadians check in here....

Hello from Surrey BC! Our house and city regulations dont allow us to keep chickens on our property, so instead we have a small covey of 5 coturnix quails ( mainly as pets!) My parents plan to one day get a little farm in Langley or Chilliwack someday and keep some chickens! Nice seeing some...
