I did water test them and they were all fine, I just wanted to make sure I would crack one open to find a half formed chick! But I just scrambled a few for dinner and they were fine.
I didn't realize dogs liked them, I'll keep that in mind!
We have a big fenced in back yard. It's easy to round them up at night, they usually wander in when it starts getting dark, anyway, and if not we shake a container of oats and they follow us right in!
My daughter found a hidden clutch of 17 eggs today. My girls only started laying a couple weeks ago and they're locked up at night and sometimes during the day. I looked up candling and tried to make sure they were okay to eat, but I'm still confused on what I'm looking for. All the candling...
I've got three cockrels (and only 9 pullets). One is getting sold at the fair this month after he gets shown for 4H, and I'll sell the other one next year. My other cockrel is a white crested black polish. The buff orpington and black giant cockrels don't mess with each other, but if they get...
Well, we got our first egg yesterday. My two year old was convinced it had a baby chicken inside, lol. Wouldn't believe me no matter what I said! I put it in an egg carton up on the bread box where I THOUGHT she wouldn't be able to get to it. While I was on the phone with my mom, she pushed...
I've heard chickens love pinkies (newborn rats/mice), but I used to have pet rats and can't bring myself to give mine any! Though some places sell them dead and frozen. Anyway, chickens are omnivores, so it shouldn't cause issues (unless, like someone else said, the rat had been poisoned).
We got our first egg today! My girls are 20 weeks old, not sure exactly who laid it.
Next to a store bought for comparison. It's small, but I'm impressed with how great the shape is and how strong the shell is!
If all you're considering is cost, it's probably not worth it (unless you're comparing the cost to store bought organic, free-range chicken, in which case I think raising your own ends up being a little cheaper, depending). But for me, it's worth it. I don't raise them to save money per say, I...
All I've done this year is strawberry jam and cherry jam (strawberries were store bought, but the cherries came from our tree). Can't wait till my garden is ready for some real canning! I'm going to do pickles, tomatoes, corn, and green beans.
I'm sorry for the loss of your husband! How awful :Hug The coop he was building looks gorgeous, I hope you find some kind hearted folks to help you finish it.

Oh, I hope you're the real owner (hmbullard is claiming, too!) because you're much funnier
I think the coop is gorgeous, but yes, the first thing I thought was "ah, but it'll be covered in poo in 5 minutes!"
We've been keep out polish inside in the dog kennel because he's getting pecked. He started crowing out of nowhere VERY boisterously last Sunday! Scared the crap out of me.
Congratulations, Holly!
We had a "for fun" 3d u/s today (our official anatomy scan won't be done until 22 weeks, I'm 19 weeks today) and found out that we're having a BOY!! Our first three were girls, then I had an early m/c, then lost a little boy at 16 weeks this past October, so it's...

In my experience, the older the bird, the tougher the skin. That 2 weeks can make a lot of difference. I find that with a bird even just a little older like that, they turn out better if I slow roast them at a much lower temp, like 250-300 for a couple of hours, (with a lid on, so they...
