    Turkey with swollen eye

Hi! My turkey hen looks like she was stung by something. Her eye is swollen and partially open. Wondering if I need to do anything? She could barely open her eye last night, but looks like it's partially open. Been keeping an eye on her....she is eating and drinking ok, but mostly laying...

I just found all 26 of my ducks headless!?!?

Raccoons are not nice. No matter how cute they are, they are trash pandas. They like to make quick kills and scurry away with whatever they can get. And then there's badgers...we keep a close lookout, now that the weather is warm. Now those suckers are MEAN! We managed to take one out last...

I just found all 26 of my ducks headless!?!?

That happened to some of my guineas 2 yrs ago; only 2 survived and ran off, but came back later on in the day. It's so hard to deal with! Definitely raccoons.

    Rooster wheezing

Hello! It seems like the last few days I've noticed that my rooster's crow seems to get lower and lower in tone, like he was losing his voice. Then I checked on him today, and he is wheezing. His crow now has a very high pitch to it. His crown has a large scab on it when he was fighting...

How long to leave chicks outside?

Thanks! They couldn't figure out how to get back in the coop last night. Hubby and I had to corner them and put them back individually. :hmm I think I'll need some netting around the perimeter of the coop so that they can figure that out on their own. Even meal worms wouldn't lure them in.

How long to leave chicks outside?

Hi! We have some 7 week old Wyandotte chicks that we felt were getting too big for the brooder. So we moved them into their new coop! Kept them inside for 2 days so that they get to know their new "home" and just let them out today. Our existing flock and roosters seem to be integrating with...

    In need of a coop!

The prefabs are ok but they're not really big enough. Although those Snap & Lock coops look pretty cool and sturdy.

Moving baby chicks into the garage....

Thanks so much for everyone's advice! We already have an existing flock, but they were all hatched by their mamas so they had a natural heat source. We already have a coop for them. Our flock has shrunk in size due to predators, so we decided to purchase 12 Wyandotte chicks from the local...

Moving baby chicks into the garage....

Hello! My chicks are 3 weeks old today and looks like we'll have to move them into the garage! We've had them in the mud / laundry room, but the smelliness and dander is really starting to flow throughout the house, yikes! :barnie I'm doing the move today. I don't have a wood brooder, but I...

    pooping in nest boxes!!!

Very true. It's a walk-in coop. We may possibly add on. In the meantime, on one side, we have one bar that most of them roost on, some nesting boxes, and I put in one of those 3 tiered plastic shelves that we put on the other side of the coop. It's like a chicken apartment. :) They take...

    pooping in nest boxes!!!

Mine do the same thing...they use it as a chicken potty. :p If there is no room on the roost bar, some of them sleep in the nesting boxes. I just clean it out and put in fresh shavings. :) And then they kick out the shavings to lay eggs, sigh. I just purchased two of those Free Range Covered...

    Too many roosters....

Well, we decided to give our 2 teenage roosters to a friend of ours, since he has the processing equipment. I'll isolate them in a dog kennel later on this week. There is too much over-mating going on. I feel bad for my poor hens.:( I will keep our 2 older roosters, as we have 9 hens. Our...

    Too many roosters....

Very true...I'm going to have to quarantine these two teenage roosters in a dog kennel for now. Our hay barn is pretty full of hay, so there's really no place to fence off in there. Some of the hens are stressed out because of the many roos; and egg production is very low, as we've been having...

    Too many roosters....

Hi! We used to have about about 12 hens, now we are down to 9, as four of them have been MIA. I found two of them recently (one in the haybarn with its feathers torn off, possible by a cat) and the other by a hawk. The others I just don't know :( I have four roosters and 9 hens. Two of the...

    Separate Roosters and Turkeys?

Hello! I have this one particular turkey hen, she is very sweet. She is the first turkey that we got when we moved on our property. We gradually bought more turkeys to keep her company. We have one Tom left, and one other hen left. They all get along fine with each other. Our one sweet...

    Bald spot on Hen

Ok, I will shut the roosters out til mid-day (because they all sleep in the coop together now because it got cold!) so that the hens can have some peace. Fed her some Feather Fixer in a small bowl. But should I bring her up to the house and separate her from the flock for a while until her...

    Bald spot on Hen

Thanks for your reply! Let's see....I have 6 barred rock hens, 4 black star hens, 1 black star chick, about 4 months old. I have 2 grown roosters, they split their time between the flock. I am thinking about either closing the coop door for an hour each day, so that the ladies can come down...
