    DIY Quail Mix

I would go one step further then just a high protein grain and give them live or dried mealworms, like blachdust said they need around 24% to be as productive as possible, so adding some animal protein would help.

    Is s/he male or female?

Looks like a Tibetan, can't really sex those based on feathering, you'll have to vent sex it or listen to the calls it makes.

Not even sure this is a chicken!

What a beautiful bird she's turning out to be! I second everyone who says she's some sort of game breed mix, and many of those game breeds are used for fighting.

    Chickens and ferrets

They would probably try and kill your chickens, but i'm not sure how successful they would be. I have two ferrets in my room with my pigeons and let them both out at the same time and the only thing the ferrets ever do is run at the pigeons so they fly up. I would recommend getting a pair of...

    Button Quail chicks keep dying?!?

Perfectly normal for them to lay outside the nest, buttons aren't normally very good mothers lol. If they're pecking at the eggs they may need more protein in their diet or they could have just been curious, giving them some mealworms or scrambled egg wouldn't hurt though!

    Quails in winter

Are you keeping them indoors? If so, you could just continue to keep them indoors during the winter.

    Quails in winter

Where are you located? Is this permanent or temporary housing?

Has anyone ever had quail eggs hatch on day 24 before?

Sounds about right! Quail are tough little buggers, and that includes they're eggs as well.

Winter is Coming.. (or is here for some)

Wow, good to know your buttons are so cold hardy! I don't keep my buttons outside but it can get a little chilly in the room I keep them in and have long suspected that they're a bit more cold tolerant than people say they are. That being said, i'm sure it wouldn't be a good idea to keep them in...

Lock Down - Here goes nothing

I had three eggs sitting under a broody button hen that I was sure weren't going to hatch (I don't remember the exact date she started sitting on them but its been a pretty long time) so when I got home today I was going to candle them to see how things were going and to my surprise there were...

How to keep a constant temp in a room with temp fluctuation?

Thanks everyone for the replies! Another related question, how should I calibrate a thermometer? I use a digital one that was used for telling outdoor temps, I think it's accurate but how can I tell?

How to keep a constant temp in a room with temp fluctuation?

My incubator is a still air incubator and doesn't have a fan attachment or anything. I'll try putting more insulation around it, maybe some coats or something, right now it's just a bunch of towels. Would putting all the insulation and the incubator in a box really help? thanks for the very...

How to keep a constant temp in a room with temp fluctuation?

So I have a little giant still air incubator in my room that I use to incubate my quail eggs, but now that the weather is getting colder its become much harder to keep the temperature relatively constant throughout, with the temp around the edges being around 97 but the temp under the heating...

    Will my buttons fall?

I wouldn't use a water cap, too small, but then again I don't use the same method to hatch in that incubator. I cut a piece of non slip mat to fit the bottom but left a small hole in the center so the fan could still circulate air freely.

Lock Down - Here goes nothing

Well surprise surprise another egg just pipped, so that'll make four out of twelve shipped jumbo Coturnix eggs.

    Red LED-christmas lights for quail?

I use a string of white Christmas lights I bought from walmart and so far it's been working great.

Need help with my first Quail raising attempt!?

Much better idea, I have both Coturnix and Buttons and the Coturnix are easily three or four times the size of the Buttons. Even if you had a very peaceful group I would still be afraid of the Coturnix outcompeting the buttons for food and stepping all over them. With incubation it depends on...

Does anyone NOT turn their eggs?

I wouldn't recommend not turning them at all, and while Iv'e never done it myself I can't imagine it's good for the developing embryo. If you're worried about the eggs settling you could always let them rest at room temperature for 12-24 hours, that's what I do.

Lock Down - Here goes nothing

Oh lol great, good thing you waited a bit! I've got three chicks now, not expecting more since I don't see much activity with the rest of the eggs but it would be a nice surprise if a few more hatched.
