Well since i no longer heard peeping from the bator 24 hours later... i gave in and attempted to see what was going on by starting on the one that was leaking. I gently opened where the air pocket was to peep inside only to discover a rotting egg as were the rest of the 5 out of 6 eggs. One even...
This is where the disastrous part comes in, we had a hen go broody after 1-3 eggs. Everyday for 2 weeks more and more eggs appeared. We were wondering when she would stop. Then we found BYC and saw that she had gone broody and that another hen was the culprit for more eggs. So we candled and...
I am starting to think they may have died... i don't know.
I heard one peeping (out of 6 eggs) yesterday at 10:00am, then at supper he stopped, and never peeped since.
Out of the 6 eggs i knew they might not all be good but i felt 2 or 3 move. Now, no movement.
One has a blood bubble that...

Thanks for the info!
Anyone know if peeping stops... is that a bad thing? I've heard they take breaks but i've heard no peeping for about 12+ hours... really starting to get discouraged.

any ideas? I just looked at the egg through the window. There is a small tiny hole and it's bubbling out of there, like liquid but light red... I just don't know what is causing it to do this? hatching maybe? or drowning? ...
Thats the whole problem. I don't know the days...
I had a broody hen who each day had new eggs. I later found out that another hen was laying in the box. So i took away the extras, and left the candled (fuller ones) with her. Forward to present day she had one hatch about 5 days ago. I decided...
so the past few days i have the bator set at 70 humidity and i try to keep it between 65-70% humidity.
Today i hear peeping... (Happy dance).
But STILL no pipping going on 12 hours... I read it could take up to 24hrs before pipping starts after peeping?
Do i have the humidity set right...
I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.
BUT i saw a wiggle! The egg keeps wiggling.
Its our first hatching and a home-made incubator. Just want to be sure the egg wiggling is normal. I can't really hear chirping... though i thought i did at one point. But he def. wiggled! No pipping yet...
I just went to check, he's out of his egg but wet still,
the 6 eggs left, not have begun pipping.... any thoughts? If he's already out of his egg, and the others haven't started pipping... does this mean their times are different or ?
I would have loved to remove the eggs and hatch them in...

We didn't know before, but after finding out half way through we seperated her from the other chickens and candled the eggs, removed the ones that were not far along and tried them in a home-made incubator... failed.
It's been quite a journey and a learning one at that.
After these...
Alrighty, so i'm going to leave the chick with her until he's out and dried.
If i were to leave the chick with mom, do you think she'd stay with the eggs until they all hatch?
If she won't, this is why i am prepared to remove the chicks while they hatch until the last one hatches and then...
I have a brooder that is closed all around (4 sides) with top open (grill top), what temp should i set it at?
Whats the minimum and maximum temperature it should be set at?
Thanks!
Natacha and my Cochin Chickens!
I just went into the barn and one of the chicks is pippin! He is going on about it too! chirping away... I can't wait.
There is a hole the size of my thumb right now and his foot is stickig out a little.
I have a problem though, the mother hen went broody after 2-3 eggs and then more appeared...

That's what were going through presently. We have two broody hens at the moment.
I didn't know what brooding was until i joined BYC. One went broody with no eggs. She lost half her weight about in the 3 weeks she was brooding. The other went broody on two eggs. Then every day there...
Yesterday i found an egg cracked, i thought it was certainly doomed if not already, but i searched on here and found that people have waxed the crack and successfully hatched the egg. So thats what i did.
I did that last night and slipped it back under her wax facing down. Today it's missing...
Beautiful!
I wish i had all those colors too!
Here we have black Cochins. We are going back to buy silver/greyish color from the person we bough these from. As well as i am getting in contact with someone here in our province for the buff color and i am going to try and find more colors.
We...
