Something similar has happend with one of my newborns, I thought I might have to put her down, but I will care for her for a few days and hope that like yours she regains her sight!
Thanks very much for the advice. She is not the healthiest little chick, and I am worried that she won't recover enough to be able to follow the mother once she gets off the eggs.
Australia. We haven't had many injuries or illnesses in the last three years having chickens (luckily), so when it happens I have no idea what is going on. If the eyeball is pierced do they lose sight in that eye? The fluid is gone now and the eye is closed.
At the moment he has a couple of thin strips of band-aid loosely over his eye to prevent pecking, when I change those I will wash with saline and apply something to prevent infection. Any more advice greatly appreciated!
Hi there,
Our hen has finally managed to have chicks without turning on them, but she gone very distressed yesterday and trod on a just hatched chick who now has an eye that seems injured with a bloody bubble on its surface. The chick needs help to prevent pecking (or further pecking) by the...
I will they have been handed over so i can nap, and I will keep hoping for the best.
Also made an investment in a little incubator. Obviously not going to help this time, but when Goldie broods or co-broods again I want to be able to save the chicks. The sad part is Goldie co-mothered with...
Not sure. I kept them warm overnight, but I am unsure if something (heat, humidity, constancy) was off. Haven't heard anything from the chirping one since late last night. Keeping it up for today, and keeping my fingers crossed.
Hello! :frow When I replaced the hot water bottle there was some very indignant chirping, so I am hopeful but I am trying not to be too hopeful. I did candle a few hours ago (which is when I first heard the chirping), and I couldn't see a beak shadow then. But I will be patient, monitor the...
I mothered an abandoned chick last year, but she was 3 weeks old (a snake got into the run and afterwards her mother rejected her), so that will be a new challenge for us.
Well I am in eastern Australia, so that is a little distance away!
Thanks so much for the suggestions. She is still...
Goldie is definitely the culprit, she did this last time she brooded. I tried to get Lily to sit on them as my first option, but she wouldn't. She has some nasty pecks on her head - I presume from Goldie - and she was a bit distressed by everything. Lily is young, and this was her first attempt...
We only have LED bulbs unfortunately. If necessary I guess that might work with the sofa and damp towel overnight. I am hoping to keep them going with the towel and hot water bottle, I just have to monitor the temprature constantly.
Thanks for your reply, no heat lamp either, our chickens handle everything on their own usually, so i don't have the equipment lots of people do.
I have got a damp warm hand towel over them now ( thanks for that), and I will change the bottle regularly so the heat is as constant as I can make...
Hi there,
One of our hens, Lily, laid eggs and was brooding until two days ago, when another hen, Goldie joined her. Goldie has a history of brooding and then killing the chicks after they have hatched, so we tend to break her when she broods. Lily was off the nest this morning and Goldie had a...
