Just got back from working outside of the house for an hour. Sweet duckling was trying to get up so I picked him up to hold him again for a bit, and wet his mouth. He passed away within two minutes of his being back with me. Feeling a bit emotional that he waited to die until I held him again...
Hi. I thought the duckling would pass yesterday, but he's holding on although with little movement. He's sleeping a lot so I am just monitoring and making sure he's comfortable. I expect today is his day to go and will keep you updated.
Thanks. I have it separated, but close. It had a few feathers on top to begin, but the red was very prominent. It didn't look so much like a crest, but more like a weird red cap with a dark red ridge. I do have one female duck of 16 that has the crested gene so I do have the gene in my flock.
That's what I feared. The only hope I had was that it was encapsulated in skin. Was hoping that there was something I could do to protect it, like a helmet of sorts.
Hello. My duckling hatched last night with this weird, large, red bump. I had her/him in with the others, but when I went to check a few minutes ago, it was over on the opposite side of the enclosure, cold, and bleeding. I took it out, put Blu-Kote on the bump/wound and separated it out. The...
Hi. I had a girl who couldn’t walk yesterday so I brought her in and started Corid as Coccidiosis is usually the culprit. This morning she was dead. Any ideas what else it could be? It’s been a hot summer so thinking maybe the heat? Thank you.
Hi. I have 40+ chickens. Five roosters in a bachelor pad that free roam and the rest in a large enclosure. Three roosters, one freeranged and two enclosed, have lost a lot of feathers. I thought it might be bugs so dusted a few times. Those three roosters keep losing feathers. All the...
Thanks for the input. I’ll keep an eye out to see if I see an off hen. Hate that one is having issues and I can’t identify her. What medication do I buy?
I have seven broody hens. Other than that none look lethargic. Nothing looks different or amiss with any of them. What type of medication do you suggest if I see it again? Is there something I can put in water other than ACV that can help? Do I treat them all? Can we eat eggs?
Hi. I need help thinking outside the box. I have a newly hatched duckling with a splayed back leg that I “casted” into place with popsicle sticks, a lego and medical tape. It can’t move either leg in the cast. It’s inside a plastic container with a washcloth to keep it upright. Can you...
Thanks. I’ll put a dish of oyster shell and crushed chicken egg shells in the hen house. I’m not sure which hen laid the egg, but will watch a bit closer. I know one of the roosters is trying to make those girls “his” girls so wondering if it’s stressing them out. He’s gentle, just...
Hi. I found this egg this morning. Can you please tell me if this is a fluke or if my hen needs something more? I’ve had a “rubber” egg in the past but it didn’t look like this. Also, a couple of hens have been broody so may not have had adequate nutrition. I leave calcium and crushed egg...
Great news to share. I candled the eggs tonight and they are all living and growing!!! The eggs no longer have the U-shape disconnect. The air sacs are a bit bigger than I’d like so I increased the humidity so my fingers are crossed that they’ll continue to grow and eventually hatch. Thank you...
Thanks. I’ll try that. So far no smell or sweat. I’ll be candling in Monday because I’m hesitant to touch them more than a couple times. Thank you for the advice.
