Thanks everyone. Well, the place that we bought the chick said that we can bring any roosters back & start with another chick, so the worst case is that we fed a rooster for about a month. No biggie. Thanks again.
Bought 2 chicks with a "90%" female rate. This one's comb is considerably larger than the other one of the same age. I don't know if that matters or not (I'm very new). Just wanted to see if anyone can tell the sex by this picture. Again, this is a buff orpington, about 6 weeks old.
Thanks! I drive by a couple chicken ranches each day & never really thought about how penned up they are. Yes, very sad. I plan on letting them out to roam around our backyard for short periods, so that might help. I also like your suggestion about getting two of the same species. I appreciate...
You could also use an angle grinder with a metal cutting disc. The disc looks like the same material used for brake pads, but it cuts through metal like a charm. I've cut through stainless steel like it was butter using the same method.
I designed a henhouse & pen that will fit perfectly in my garden. I'll be able to move the pen from one side to the other based on each harvest/season. While small, I took note of many of the other "small" prebuilt chicken coops out there & figured that I would be fine putting 2 chickens in a...
Great stories and advice! Personal experiences are great to hear. So after all the input, I'm thinking Orpington, Ameraucana, Barred Rock, & Rhode Island Red. I'd like to do chicks for easter as a surprise for my daughter, but I don't want to have to deal with a rooster...what to do... Thanks...
Terrific information! How bad is the smell from 4 chickens going to be? I live in a suburban area with neighbors on both sides and I don't want to create any problems. Thanks.
Ahh! Question: Does it matter if I get 4 different breeds? I'm guessing chickens are docile regardless of the breed, but just wanted to be sure... Thanks again, you all are awesome!
Uh oh! Four seems like a lot, but I would want them to be happy. I forgot to mention that I live in San Diego, so it can get pretty warm around summer time. Not sure if that makes a difference with the breeds suggested or not. Thanks for the help, keep the advice coming!
My wife wants eggs, I want poop for the garden and our daughter would love a pretty chicken to play with. We MIGHT splurge and go for two chickens. I'm brand new, but after a tiny bit of research, I'm leaning towards a Leghorn(possibly Exchequer) and maybe a Bantam. So there you have it! A...
