hens stopped laying and it's Spring!

This morning one of the hens has swollen tissue at the top of the beak, just above the nostrils. I swear she didn't look like that yesterday. The swollen area is symetrical, not red or hot. There's no discharge from nostrils, eyes, etc. and she's breathing normally. I had a quick inside her...

hens stopped laying and it's Spring!

We're getting about 13.5 hrs from sunrise to sunset right now. Just the one shell-less egg, the rest has been just laying nothing. And now I think on it, it's been closer to two weeks!

hens stopped laying and it's Spring!

My two quail hens stopped laying about a week ago. I'm in New Zealand, so it's halfway through Spring here! They are about 9 months old. They slowed down a little over Winter but never really stopped - though I didn't give then artificial light or anything. I think they each at different times...

    Coturnix Quail hens "crowing"

I've got 4 quail hens in two cages in the same room - 2 in one cage and 2 in the other. One cage is on top of the other. They are all confirmed female, and since I sold the males that were in with then (1 was in each cage), 2 of the females have taken up their own version of crowing. It is not...

    Introducing new quail

They are Coturnix, all confirmed female. The cage is 110cm by 55 cm - seems like plenty of room for 4 birds.

    Introducing new quail

All 4 of my birds are different colour variations, so that is probably not helping! I just separated them today, no one was getting seriously injured, and but there was a lot of fighting and jumping around. I could have given it more time but these birds live in my study and I couldn't take the...

    Introducing new quail

Any advice on getting newly introduced quail to get along with each other? I had 2 in one cage, 2 in a seprate cage as they were new, to do 30 day quarentine. I tried putting them all in together yesterday. One of the original quail was being so agressive, I put her back on her own. The other I...

    Quail Egg Recipes

On a side note, is anyone familiar with mug cakes? The idea is, you make a tiny ammount of cake batter in a mug, microwave it for a minute or two, and you have instantly made one serving of cake? I have tried a few,and I find the recipes without egg are not quite right, and the recipes with one...

    Quail Egg Recipes

Well my son has requested we make a cake so I googled "cake recipe that uses a lot of eggs" and discovered that pound cake recipes use 6 to 10 chicken eggs! The 10 egg recipes make a very big cake, though. We will probably try a 6 egg recipe. There are several pound cake recipes on this forum...

    Quail Egg Recipes

I considered deviled eggs as I really like them but I'm not sure I have the patience to scoop out all those tiny yolks and then re-fill all those tiny eggs.

Quail drinking lots of water/ watery poos

When I first separated them into 2 cages, they had 2 different types of water dispensers. The one with the water-obsessed quail had a hamster water bottle type thing, and it did spill a LOT onto the bedding when they drank. So I kind of chalked up the difference in how fast their water ran out...

Quail drinking lots of water/ watery poos

One of my quail is drinking way more water than the others, and her poos are coming out watery, but otherwise normal. I think its been the case for a while, but when I separated my 4 into 2 cages (2 in each cage) it became apparent - one cage was going through water at more than double the rate...

    Weird Tasting Quail Eggs

Which varieties of quail to you have? I've got one pharoah and one Tibetan female. Certain breeds of chicken are more prone to laying fishy eggs, so I'm wondering if the same is true of quail. I may start keeping eggs from my two layers seprate to see if it's just one of them laying the fishy...

    Weird Tasting Quail Eggs

Just googled it, and possibly the eggs were just high in Omega-3s so the good news is I'm not going to die :p https://www.theartofdoingstuff.com/do-your-eggs-taste-fishy-its-the-curse-of-the-omegas/ I'd still like to get to the bottom of it as I don't fancy fishy tasting eggs! Maybe the...

    Weird Tasting Quail Eggs

Our quail started laying a little over a week ago. The first 4 eggs we ate tasted fine. Well, my son ate the first one, the next 3 we made into scrambled eggs with and shared, it tasted exactly like chicken eggs. We just hard boiled 5 of them (the next oldest ones, so they are about 1 week old)...

    quail getting picked on

That's what I've just done! The white male chilled immediately. The confirmed female seems a little worried but hopefully will settle. The 2 Tibetans left in the old cage are trying to figure out how to get to the new cage now, (I placed the new cage back into the same room with the old cage)...

    quail getting picked on

Okay I just watched a few you tube tutorials and tried vent sexing. White one is definitely male but I alreayd knew that. The pharoah is definitely female but already knew that. The Tibetan that was attacking the white is definitley male. The other Tibetan, I couldn't really see a lump under the...

    quail getting picked on

Thanks, I'll try vent sexing today. Will 1 female be okay with him for a week? I worry she would get too much attention/ harassed if the males are happiest with multiple females?
