Help! Raising a Rooster around kids??

I hear it really just depends on the rooster, and that has been true in our situation. We have two roosters (both 10 months old). One is somewhat agressive and one is not at all. They were both handled the same way as chicks.

How long should I try and save a baby chick?

Hi all :) You've always been such a great source of information and wisdom. Here I am again with another question. This time I'm more asking for the opinions of more experienced chicken owners than look for a particular suggestion (although those are welcome, too). We had a broody hen hatch 10...

    Sudden Egg Decline. Thoughts?

Just wanted to follow up and let you all know that we found a stash of eggs (over 30!). It wasn't enough eggs to make up for all that we'd missed, but it certainly did solve some of the mystery. I still appreciate all the advice and am trying out all-flock feed now instead. Thanks!

    Sudden Egg Decline. Thoughts?

You might want to make that decision based on how much they lay in the winter (if at all). Although I'm really thinking about trying an all-flock year-round anyway, based on some of the comments here and on other threads I've read today.

    Sudden Egg Decline. Thoughts?

Thanks, aart. I think retraining is in order, even if they aren't hiding eggs. I didn't mind them laying in the barn, but the goats might. :hmm I am using the DuMor layer feed from TSC right now, though I'm planning to grab a bag of all-flock or mix with a higher protein feed as soon as I can...

    Sudden Egg Decline. Thoughts?

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll check the feed and definitely consider switching. I guess I just assumed layer was better for layers than an all-flock.

Your opinion on mix of breeds

I don't think you'll have many problems, as long as it's not a flock of all one kind with only one loner. If you're really concerned, what about a second Polish? That way there is another unusual chicken to take some of the pestering if the other chickens do get particular.

    Sudden Egg Decline. Thoughts?

Hi all, thanks again for helping me with my new flock this past winter. Now the girls (and boys) are all grown up and laying eggs. Up until recently, we were averaging 10-11 eggs each day. We have 14 hens and 2 roosters. Sometime last week (or perhaps around 10 days ago), that number started to...

7 week-old chicks just moved outside

All 16 made it through the night. Everyone was happy this morning, and the water didn't even freeze inside the coop (outside it did), so I'm very pleased. It will be quite a bit warmer tonight, so I think the real danger is past. Thank you all for your help and kind words!

7 week-old chicks just moved outside

No (thank goodness)! I went out just now with a cardboard box and some extra bedding. There was no cheeping when I approached the coop. They didn't love me messing around in there, but I put the box on its side and covered it with bedding and checked on their food and water. I'll do another...

7 week-old chicks just moved outside

Thank you! I have about an inch of bedding in there, but I can add more. We didn't have any problems with our water (horizontal nipples in a 5-gallon bucket) last year. I'll check the chicks' water (same setup) first thing in the morning when I take the dog out. It was the cheeping that...

7 week-old chicks just moved outside

Good evening, chicken folks! I've been checking the forums since we got chickens 18 months ago, but I finally made myself an account just to ask for ideas/confirmation tonight. Here's what's worrying me: I moved my 7-week old chicks outside today. They have been in my unheated basement since...
