Good luck with your healing, so glad he didn't chip a bone. In March I bought 7 barred rock 3 day old pullets. Two of them turned out to be roosters. I can not let my flock free range so I don't want roosters( but I do enjoy their crowing). I have tried to keep roosters in the past but at about...
I do not free range my chickens so my husband and I added on to the run a couple of times. It is 624 sq ft. We have chicken wire across the complete top, with roofing over 3/4 of the area.
I have two hens that are dropping feathers like they are molting. Two different breeds. One is 18 months old and the other is 2 yrs old. I know the others are not picking feathers.
I bought 3 Barn Yard mix at the feed store 3 weeks ago. Since I have had some alone time I decided to take a picture of what is developing with this cutie! Feed store guy is guessing part Brahma.
That is good to know. Since most of the time I just wash their dirty bottoms I usually just soak them in Epson salts water, rise and either blow dry or if it is warm just put them back in their run. They don't mind getting their bottoms washed at all!
While she is broody she doesn't lay eggs. I have hens for the eggs not as pets. Once she is laying again she may go 4 or 5 months before going broody again.
I have moved the crate to different locations and have tried a larger dog crate in a different part of the run. Thank you for your suggestion. It's always good to get other opinions.
This is my sweet Black Australorp. She isn't 2 yrs old yet but she has gone broody 4 times (including 4 days ago). Keeping her in isolation in a wire cage doesn't always break her. Last year it took 19 days. I don't have a rooster and don't need her to set on eggs. I may decide to give her to a...
I have remote control switches I ordered from Amazon by my back door. I have a hanging small florescent work light I leave in the coop and have installed a lot of small white Christmas lights under the roof of their covered run. When I get up around 7 am I turn on their lights and go let them...
I am going into day 9 with my broody Black Australorp. I have had her in a wire cage with food and water. I put her on the roost at night locked up with the rest of the girls. This evening I took out the nest she liked when she could get to it. She went to two other nests. She is very...
I have a Black Australorp who has gone broody for the second time this spring. I just put her in a suspended cage but will try no food for 48 hours, just water. She really has an attitude!
My run is over 600 ft, I sift poop from my sand 2 to 3 times a day for my 19 hens. (I am retired except for the poop scooping business) Saying that I don't want anymore birds than I have now because of scooping poop! :) But I do enjoy the run being fairly clean.
I cleaned my chicken run and then added sand. I use a metal kitty litter scoop to clean the poop several times a day. Hardly any smell from my 19 hens! I use pine shavings in my coop and shavings and hay in the nest boxes. I also have poop platforms under the roost that I clean every morning...
I shared this picture early in this discussion but it would take a lot of time to go through each comment. The length of the long board is 7'. I painted the plywood it is made out of and covered it with clear vinyl carpet runner (at the time Lowes had it in their carpet area). I faithfully...
I have a Red Sex Link that has always had thin shells. I give free choice oyster shell and mostly the rest of my hens have nice shells except on occasion! Good luck!
