I don't candle my eggs often, sometimes not at all, but it's probably better if you do candle them.

    Broody Leghorn!! who knew!!

Wait...one more question. You said you haven't had a rooster in years right? If your hens haven't been around a rooster in years, then your eggs won't be fertile, which means the eggs won't hatch. Either way, good luck!

    Broody Leghorn!! who knew!!

I had a leghorn, Leana, go broody a couple summers ago, and she was sitting on a bunch of eggs. My dad had found the nest and he said that there were still more hatching, but it appeared that one had died, so I went to take a look. There were two chicks that were already hatched, a black and...

Can a broiler bird live out a normal, full-length life?

I know the feeling of not wanting to end the life of a beloved pet, but I would highly recomend just doing away with her. If you are certain that she is a meat breed, then yes, it would be more humane to just get it over with. If they aren't butchered in time, they can mess up their legs or even...

Best chicken breed for tick control?

I would say guinea fowl. No, they're not chickens, but they're hardy and take care of bugs including ticks very well. Guineas tend to be flighty however, but if you get them as babies and handle them lots when they're young, you can get them to be friendly. Guineas come in many beautiful colors...

    Is my hen broody?

Chances are she is. If she fluffs up a lot and only gets off the nest 1 or 2 times a day, she is most likely broody. She won't actually be laying eggs if she is broody, just taking over other eggs.

    What breed is this?

It might be a Blue Andalusian or a Blue hen of Delaware. I honestly don't know. Try googling it.

    Sick hen

well thats good if she has no lice. Her droppings look normal. Might just be the cold. Some of my chickens also had frostbite on their combs and are sometimes fluffed up. Maybe install a heat light or some electric heat source in your coop. Good luck!

Topic of the Week - Broody vs Incubator

Personally, I like the idea of having a hen hatch eggs over an incubator. This is because usually the hens have better hatch rates then incubators, they don't require electricity, and the do all the work. I do however like incubators because you get to watch the whole hatching process.

    Sick hen

Check her for lice. You can simply do so by holding her securely upside down and spread her feathers out of the way until you can see her skin. If you see tiny little specks running to and fro, she has lice. Also, if you see white dots clumped around the shaft of her feathers, that means she has...
