Lost 3 birds this week, a lil RHR mix roo born in Jan, a 3 month old Australop hen and an adult good producer Wellsummer I paid $50 for 8 months ago... Daytime Coyote folks... in a decently populated area (1-3 acres properties, 1 mile from I-15 in socal). That's where it's at nowadays. so to...

Chicken Shaming to Lighten the Mood

I like that. I've noticed that with mine too. My older girls in the 2yr range tend to "keep things together" and facilitate newbies into the flock... noticed this week and thought it was kinda sweet and made sense.... chicken wise :)

    Flax seed chicks buzz?

Ok, weird one but bear with me... Got 2 3 weeks old, been on chicks feeds since, some vitamined water. Gave them flax seeds earlier, dismissed, no reaction at first, then got a taste and went nuts on them. 2 minuets later, they're comatose-ish, sorta dusting around-like amd rolling on each...

    Many years later...I'm back!!!

Can't take the chicken passion out of a chickeneer :) Glad for you! Oregon still? Great place to raise! I have relatives near Cloverdale, they're semi "off the grid" and raising a nice size flock. Such a beautiful place.

How to get Marek's vaccine in the US?

Ha ValleyVet, used them many times, not sure why it didn't come up. They're 2 weeks old. I've been careful to not isolate them (they're in the garage). From what I read, the virus doesn't pass the egg barrier. Could be wrong. Worth a shot I think, no pun. Thanks!

Can you potty train a chicken?

HELL NO! :) I have a huge Brahma who poops every time she starts running... can't fix that :)

    Rooster?

I was concerned about the change in behavior with a roo around too. Not all roosters are created equal. I think Silkie ones are known to be pretty relax, kinda the Lab retrievers of chicken breeds :). Isolating him might make him anxious, lonely and develop weird habits, one way street. I...

How to get Marek's vaccine in the US?

Prescription required? The equine version doesn't require one, at least online. I'm sure Komifornia has an overrule. I couldn't find a source online, everyone seems backordered. What's the oldest the chick can be? I read a day-old and 3-4 days for "the vaccine to work"...

    Disclaimer: Controversial "culling" method

1ml = 100IU. Kinda hard to gauge with a typical 3cc syringe that would be 1/10 of a ml... I use 29g insulin needles, tiny and much easier to gauge.

Twelfth Year of Emooz and Autumn Figs

LOL great thread. I would love to raise these some day. They seem to be so good to be around and my wife swears their oil cured her Eczema. :)

Incubated and hatched a "store" egg...

LOL indeed and don't jinx it @Fishkeeper :) Hatching might be addictive... if I wasn't moving this summer I would go full blast:
