Should I Give Up On Her Being Motherly?

Thanks so much. That is what I figured, but was hoping for some miracle!

Should I Give Up On Her Being Motherly?

I have a broody hen that hatched out 7 chicks. She was a perfect broody, and a good momma in the beginning. But, I think she’s ready to move on. The chicks are two weeks old— too young to be in the coop or outside without her protection. But she obviously is trying to escape them. She has also...

    We’ve got a broody, We’ve got eggs...Now what?

Thanks so much for the help! I attempted to move her tonight to a sectioned off area and she went absolutely berserk, so I guess she’s staying in the nesting box I have not seen her eat, drink or poop at all in about four days. I put food and water next to her, but she showed absolutely no...

    We’ve got a broody, We’ve got eggs...Now what?

One of our hens has finally gone broody. She’s been sitting on unfertile eggs for about five days, and we are getting fertile ones tomorrow that I would like to put under her. Right now she is sitting in a nesting box in the coop. I have a couple questions on how best to proceed: -Should I...

7 wk Mixed Breed...Pullet or Cockerel?

Thank you! My mind kept telling me cockerel, but I was holding out hope for a pullet! The other two cockerels from this hatch are already red and attempting to crow. I think they will all be headed to the freezer after their grow out time.

7 wk Mixed Breed...Pullet or Cockerel?

I have a 7 wk cross, Delaware roo over Golden Laced Wyandotte hen. I was thinking cockerel, but am holding out a little hope that it’s a female. Do I need to give up my hope? The first three pics are at 7 weeks, and the last one was taken a couple weeks ago at week 5–the comb hasn’t gotten...

Know Any Good Hatcheries For Rare Chickens?

Meyers is the hatchery we get our chicks from. They are local to me, and I do pick up, so I can't speak on how they ship. However, we have not been disappointed in their chicks. Always healthy and they have always thrived for us--our oldest hen is 8 and the boss of the flock. I have not had...

Welsummer & Cuckoo Marans Chick Sexing

Thank you! I hope that you are right—our other Welsummer laid lovely terra-cotta eggs with speckles and she was quite chatty. I’d love to have those types of eggs in our basket again.

Welsummer & Cuckoo Marans Chick Sexing

Thanks so much! I was leaning that way with the Welsummers, but had no clue with the Marans. I will try and remember to update in a couple months when it becomes obvious.

    Hatching Surpise, Orpington help needed

We purchased 6 Lavendar Orpington eggs from a local breeder. The parent stock was a Lavendar roo over Lavendar, Lavendar Mottled and Isabel hens. All 6 hatched, and three were Lavendars, but I am guessing that the other three are not—I am actually pleased with this, because we love a varied...

Welsummer & Cuckoo Marans Chick Sexing

I have read various places that it’s possible to sex Welsummers and Cuckoo Marans as chicks by their markings. If this this true, I’d love opinions on what these are—they are only a couple days old. They are all hatched by us, but the eggs are from Meyer’s, so hatchery stock. The Welsummers...

Is this little guy stuck? To help or not?

He actually ended up getting it off himself. I was waiting for another egg to finish zipping, since it was nearly there, and by the time it was finished the shell helmet was off. He is a tiny little thing, about 2/3 the size of his sibling, but has proven himself to at least be persistent.

Is this little guy stuck? To help or not?

I just wanted to update—he made it out on his own at about 4:00 this afternoon. Poor thing has an eggshell helmet that is stuck to his head, but we will deal with that soon. He’s up and moving and fluffing out.

Is this little guy stuck? To help or not?

Thank you for the advice—I did decide to sit on my hands and wait; I really don’t want to mess up the hatch. He’s still in the egg, but has managed to break through the membrane that I can see. There is some membrane that is stuck/dry to his feathers, but I will deal with that later if I...

Is this little guy stuck? To help or not?

I apologize for yet another ‘should I assist’ post..I realize that it is best to leave the chick to hatch on it’s own, but the mama in me wants to help and I can’t decide if I should. This is day 20. The egg is from an Easter Egger and it pipped around 8:00pm last night, but did so at the...
