Advanced bumblefoot but no obvious point of entry.

It was definitely very old and somewhat hardened pus 🤢 I didn’t put a nose to it, but it also surprisingly didn’t stink up the area, as I’ve smelled abscesses do before. Bleah! And yes, we believe it is ALL out now, and the healing can REALLY begin 🤗

Her spirits seemed even stronger tonight, and she is definitely on the mend after her first day with that crap out of her foot! We have a laser pointer on the way, which we will begin using in an attempt to further heal her left foot. We’ve read it works, so we’ll give it a try. I’m also...

We have been administering the antibiotic (sulfadiazine trimethoprim) and the meloxidyl orally using syringes. We just hold her and tilt her head up and squirt it down her throat. The antibiotic dose is only .5ml twice a day, so that one’s easy, but the meloxidyl dosage is 2ml in the mornings...

A reply like yours is exactly why I wanted to post all of this info here. We’ve dealt with bumblefoot before, but had never seen such an advanced case, and there wasn’t much info available for aggressive treatment. Most info on cases this bad ended with euthanasia, but her spirit has been so...

So, this thing started presenting after the doc removed what he believed to be all of the infectious debris. If you notice, the photo of it protruding under the skin is taken from behind the foot looking out to her toe. There is a scar near her toe that is from her life before us, and is...

Update: Clover is still doing well! Her right leg is completely healed, but her left leg remains about the same. The surgical sites have healed, but swelling remains. Something has been working its way to the surface at the top of her foot, and tonight the wife pulled it out! Viewer discretion...

Well, we are nearly 4 months into treatment. Doc has kept her on the TMS (antibiotic) and Meloxidyl for pain management. Right leg is completely healed. Left leg finally healed enough for the doc to make a confident decision about if/where to operate. Surgery last Thursday. Doc removed a...

Clover is doing very well! Thanks for asking! Today was the first week of her 3-week course of antibiotics and metacam. Still getting two baths a day, and the whole DMSO+neosporin wrap job at night. Swelling receding slowly but surely. She loves her time in the front yard, and zooms around bug...

    Hairy Vetch Bird Toxicity

I just wanted to leave this here after what happened last night. Hairy Vetch is toxic to geese. Our gander spent six hours violently vomiting every 8-12 minutes, like clockwork, last night. Would not eat, and would vomit ANY water he took in. His eyes became sunken, and were looking worse and...

Continued improvement. DMSO seems to be helping with the swelling, and possibly bringing some infection sites to the surface. Attitude still unchanged. She’s a very happy duck, considering! Followed through with the vet appt this morning. Received a 3-week course of antibiotics...

Scratch that. Not gonna get crazy with antibiotics. No change in attitude. She’s such a good girl 🥰 We have applied DMSO+neosporin to the “mystery leg”, and the other leg continues to heal nicely. If improvement keeps up, we may not need the vet by Saturday.

Vet appt on Saturday. Thinking about trying enrotex 🤔

Day 3 of recovery. She and her sister were found at a pond a little over a week ago. She’s had swollen feet since we met her. The humane society mandated a 6-day hold on them, before we could adopt them. We knew it was bumblefoot, and could treat her, but they insisted on the wait. Until then...

Bumblefoot w/o scab, or something else?!

Could also be a break. We once had a drake who had broken that same toe running from siblings and falling over things. He literally walked it off, but it was swollen like that for a while, then permanently bent after healing. He limped a little after, but was otherwise fine. Check the joint and...

Bumblefoot w/o scab, or something else?!

Looks like bumblefoot. Warm epsom compresses after a tub soak will start to bring whatever is in there to a head, then you can deal with removal. Meanwhile, take advantage of her still eating and drinking, and feed higher protein food and apple cider vinegar in her water. Invest in a pair of...

Advanced bumblefoot but no obvious point of entry.

We’ve recently rescued two abandoned pekin ducks. One has a fairly advanced case of bumblefoot, with both legs and tops of feet swollen badly. One foot had an obvious wound that we opened and removed a large core of infection and tendrils. That leg is healing very nicely, but the other remains...

    Blue poop?

My geese exhibit this every now and again, and it can be quite curious. The only thing I can think of that would cause this (in our case) is feeding them black grapes, which I did tonight. Here is the result after napping on the stoop for a couple hours!!!
