Ok I have raised a few batches of meat chickens but haven’t had any be sickly, until this batch. My question is when is too sick to process, safely? I have one with hip displacement or broken leg. And another with discolored comb who seems to be struggling, I am thinking his heart is given out...
Hello from Western NY. We have four barred rock hens, and a new batch of 12 pullets ( I hope) they are 7/8 weeks old we have australops, black sex links, Red Cross, amberlinks, and buff orpingtons. Plus two cornish crosses. Hoping to get more meats and maybe some silkie bantams if we can ever...
Ok this is the runt of all my newest chicks. Picked up a few different breeds and I am not sure if she is a Amberlink or a Buff Orpington any thoughts?
Thank you so much! I wasn’t sure about the GMO’s in store bought chickens. And for the last year i have been using my own venison instead of beef for our red meat intake. Just like the idea of obtaining my own food.
I would definitely like white meat , economical sure . I was considering the Cornish cross or red ranger. I believe the goal would be to keep the meat separate from my egg layer girls. So they will have a large open topped run ( dog kennel) .
Looking for a bit of advice. I have 7 egglayers my wonderful barred rock girls, but am interested in starting some meat raising. Just got the ok to start a coup for the meat birds but am wondering what type. We culled the roaster we obtained when we got our “straight run” and butchering was not...
Now if I could just figure out which one did it lol and give her extra treats :love:woot and then get all of them to be consistent. Thus far I never know how many I will collect on any given day. But each day is like Christmas. :yesss::jumpy
so one of my wonderful barred rocks is laying giant double yolks. I am assuming the first huge egg I got is a double and the one I got this am, that I cracked open to enjoy, is. So my question is will she always lay double yolks or is this just a fluke?
Lain in a clean nest. So far the ones who are laying are going to the nest. With exception to the two newest layers who have taken to laying just outside of the box. Ha but so far those eggs are to soft for consumption, but it’s only day two for them.
I was debating on adding the shells because the girls are free ranging during the day (with the exception of when we are away) and I read somewhere that they don’t need them if they free range. But I think i will grab some and offer some on the side for them. Thank you:thumbsup
I have 7 barred rocks about 4/5 months old. I have one who seems to have her laying down to a science. But the others not so much. Got 4 eggs for the first time today, but two were soft and one had some color irregularities. Any thoughts? It is the second time I have had the irregular colored egg.
Agree agree agree. I remember as a little child my grandparents had chickens, with a mean old rooster who would chase us, for my grandparents they were food and sustainability during impoverished times. Fast forward 35-40 years and now I have chickens and they definitely are all 5 of those...
