Comment by 'bonsaiherb' in item 'Easter Eggers'

"Large Fowl" Headline description should be changed. Easter Egger's usually are smaller birds, though they lay quite large eggs.

Welsummer, Speckled Sussex, or Light Brown Leghorn?

Some of those photos are superb. Great shooting. do think the 'Preacher' Speckled Sussex caption to the picture fitted it quite well. "And when you sin ... do it well, it gets easier over time." Or was it Martin Luther who said that if you sin, do so boldly and then find yourself in faith...

    Dominant Copper chickens ???

Thank you so very much. NOPE, that is not a chick I want. Many of those like ISA lay so many eggs that you start losing them after two years - usually with egg laying issues. They basically lay themselves to deth and are not the greatest free ranging chickens out there. Need high protein feed to...

    Dominant Copper chickens ???

My local Farm and Feed store is selling these NEW Czech hybrid chicks that they call Dominant Copper. A take on Copper Maran and these are apparently sex linked black chicks with a touch of white. Supposedly a Cross between Copper Maran and other chickens. Description reads "Large copper and...

    Sapphire gem

I liked those Sapphire Gems and had thought to cross them with my Ameraucana's. As it turned out I discovered that my egg selling days were over. Some low life stole my eggs - WHILE I was home. At that point I realized I did not want people coming onto the property. Sold them and others. Am now...

New Here - Dan from Austin, TX

Those chicken sweats look grand. We have been living with 3 ft. snows an 14 F lows for some time and it is hard to even get them down from the roosts. Now that the weather has moderated they still look a bit shell shocked - like "where are our wellies and galoshes?" Would outfit them of course...

    Cold eggs

Chick - N - Fun. Love the tutu. My own chickens must be wanting something similar. Hard to get them off the roost even for warm food. Snow, ice and now 15 degrees - I think they all want wellies as a minimum. Strangely enough, the Rooster does venture forth, but none of the hens will leave the...

    Cooked Rice?

Hate to say it but my chickens LOVE anything with FAT in it. I let them finish off the gristly pork chop and other cooked meat parts, including the Turkey carcass. They do an admiral job on it. Suggestive of the ancient 'air burials' the ancients and even some of our native tribes used to do...

    Cooked Rice?

Lovely picture Diannastar. BTW - one warning about foods. Do not feed them dry potato flakes - those WILL expand and probably kill them. I use that and water to keep down the mice.

    Chicken Breed Focus - Ameraucana

By the way I LOVE those black hens. Lovely birds. Wish I had them. Hear the lay darker blue eggs generally. Is that true? I am hoping for some 'Olive Egger' crosses with my Ameracauna Rooster and not the common Marans but with some Speckled Sussex. We will see. Cross with Faverolle hens is very...

    Chicken Breed Focus - Ameraucana

Nothing stupid about the question. The Ameracauna is a relatively new breed that may have little pure Aracauna DNA in it. (Not 'truth in advertising' at all! Name grabbers.) Was created by involving other chicken breeds. Easter Eggers seem to be Ameracaunas that don't quite fit the breeders...

What predators can roosters actually kill/fend off?

I would add that to date my rooster and chickens seem to discourage the predation of seagulls when treats are put out. So far the seagull observes but does not compete.

Ameriflower (MPC) x Blue Ameraucana Roo

Ameriflower??? Sold by mypetchicken - not much information is given except that it is an unrecognized breed Cross of an Ameracauna and something: Perhaps a Swedish Flower - rooster shown below. EE eggs. Expensive!!! https://www.mypetchicken.com/chicken-breeds/Ameriflower-B153.aspx Way back in...

Ameriflower (MPC) x Blue Ameraucana Roo

For a moment I thought flashback to the olden days. Red glasses - always wondered how they kept them on. Knock on wood, to date I have had no pecking problems with any of my chickens. Horrible habit to have.

    No eggs- new chickens!!!

Bad timing to hope for continued laying. Winter is here and some breeds are much more light needy than others. My Speckled Sussex simply went on walkabout - I doubt they will begin laying again until February. "They are reputed to lay well through the winter months." My Ameraucana and EE are...

    Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Will be looking for Ameraucana/Araucana/Faverolle chicks or fertile eggs next Spring. /would adopt an extra recognized Black, Blue, Blue Wheaten, Silver standard Rooster. Bit uncomfortable about introducing a singleton Rooster (or hen) to an established flock. Am also a mite shy of hens for two...

Local Hatcheries/Breeders in Western Washington State

Sounds like a great flock to be. I will be looking for Ameraucana or Araucana chicks o eggs to hatch next Spring. Responded to someone in the Port Orchard area a few days ago ( some Blue Wheaton Ameraucana Roosters) -Craig's list - no response.

When do Speckled Sussex begin to lay eggs?

Mine began laying as soon as the others did, but they were the first to STOP laying. Ameraucana are still producing well. Thought SS were good Winter bearing chickens. They also seem to be prone to laying in wild nests rather than in the coop.

    Chicken quit laying. Stressed out?

Not sure about the 'reasons' but my Sussex have always been a bit devious in their laying habits. My Americaunas ALWAYS lay in their nests but the Speckled gals like to hide them in the large free range nest I have given them. SO, I put them in lockup. Plenty of food and even the larger half of...
