Peep is the one on the right, with her new 2 week younger siblings nugget and pepper (and adopted mom ginger).
The little one below is Peeps original (I'm pretty sure brother) born just 2 days before. So much bigger!
She (my daughter named her Peep) is doing great :thumbsup
She is much smaller than her sibling, but we have a momma for her now!! My bantam Cochin hatched 2 eggs about 2 weeks after Peep hatched, and she accepted her! :clap:woot
Came home from work today to find the little one running around with its eyes open! :clap
Picked up some nutridrench on my way home and still gave it some, as it doesn't look like it touched its food much if at all.
Thanks again for everyone's help thus far!:D
Will keep updating.
It is
It is a tough call! I dont at all mind brooding them myself, but those mamas will go crazy if I take their chick away, and I would prefer that chick to be able to stay with them. I did find a place selling baby chicks about 2 hours from me that were born roughly the same day. I was...
The chick drinks very well on it's own, although it does seem to hold its beak in the air for an excessively long time after taking a sip. I will try getting the nutridrench tomorrow and the qtip trick if need be.
I really appreciate everyone's inputs!! :hugs
It's not with other chicks. Unfortunately one of the "moms" already pecked the second chick to hatch to death, and their is only one other chick left now, who they are good to. I have one other broody who has 3 eggs under her, but they still have a week to go.
I dont currently have...
Ok looking for a little more help! Was hoping by now the little chick would be improving, however it barely opens its eyes, just a little when its startled or you pick it up. It also is not eating at all. I've tried starter, mash, scrambled egg, it has no interest at all. It is drinking the...
There were 2 others. The first that hatched was a RIR chick, the second chick was black. One of the broodies killed the second one :( I am debating now what to do with this poor little one. Being there are 2 mothers and just one chick right now (they are in a seperate coop from the rest of the...
He's out! A few hours ago I went to check on him and he was completely out and disconnected. He just has a small spot on him where his cord was but otherwise seems good. He is very wobbly but he has drank a little bit of water and is mostly sleeping and peeping.
So he started thrashing about and came out of the membrane a bit... there is whitish stuff on him still which is attached to the membrane along with 2 blood vessels. He really wants to move though, which I'm concerned about. The membrane has also gotten a bit dryer, and seems hard to get back...
Just got home, it's still doing well. It peeps and flaps it's one wing that it isn't laying on, and sort of pecks at its body a little. Not sure if I should help it out at this point? I can't see the yolk, but I never really could. That part of the chicken is hard to see.
We made it through the night!! Very wiggly and peepy this morning, seems mostly out of the membrane now, one leg completely out.
At what point, if the chick doesn't come out of the rest of the shell/membrane on it's own, should I attempt to help?
I really appreciate the guidance. I used the oiled qtip to unstick the hard parts of the membrane, which were the darker parts by the chicks neck in the picture, and this worked :D I have it on a dry paper towel, with only the membrane covered in oil (some may have inadvertently gotten on the...
Here are some updated pictures. I keep it covered in coconut oil soaked paper towels, but moved them for the picture. It moves around a lot still, peeps on occasion, and has opened its eyes just a little a few times that I've noticed. I don't have high hopes for it, but I'm going to try...
So the chick still seems to be doing well, wiggling around a lot more, but eyes still closed. However I have a new concern. While I was able to keep most of the exposed membrane wet still, the very edges of it where it is torn are hard and dry in a few spots, and appear to be stuck to the...
It's so hard to keep it moist, but I've been applying coconut oil as often as I can. The problem with the heat lamp is it dries everything out so quick! I've soaked some paper towels in the oil and laid them on the chick, it seems to be helping. The chick has even started peeping and is more...
