I've been noticing a lot of timid behaviour from our Orpington girl and have been wondering what could be done about it. It isn't even that the bullying is all that bad, but it is frustrating to see her act so submissive even when no one is actively harassing her.
This is a remarkably simple...
We've had our hens for a few months and have gotten pretty used to their noises by now. But there are 2 noises that still have us puzzled.
1. Sometimes our chickens will make a crrrrrrrn noise while staring intently into space. At first we thought it was a predator warning, but when we check...
My Australorp suddenly started acting really down and quiet yesterday, kept drinking water (and pooping it out in very running poops), and while today she's gone back to eating and drinking like normal, she's now making white, watery poops like milk.
She's also been off laying for a few days...
Savedbygrace's comment made me wonder about whether cats really do have bird killing properties, and turns out they really do! Pasteurella septicaemia. From what I've can tell, it's the avian strain of pasteurella multocida infection (might be wrong, I'm not a vet myself) that comes from the...
Ohh, she's gonna hate that. But that does sound like a good idea. Do I do it with a normal nail file? Or is there something stronger out there?
...Do chicken nail files exist...?
So, I noticed this today:
No idea when or how she managed it.
It looks like the top layer of her beak chipped and split. She doesn't seem bothered by this and is eating and acting normally. Is this normal?? Should I do something or will it take care of itself?
That sounds a lot like our situation! Her previous owner didn't pay them a whole lot of attention, just mostly let them do their own thing while he spent the day at work. She's eaten out of my hand once or twice, but it's always been chunks of food she can run off with, and she only learnt to do...
I got a new chook a few days ago and I'm not sure what to make of her behaviour. We got our new Orpington, Chestnut, as a friend to our lone Australorp, Peggy. I know we're supposed to quarantine any new chickens but we quickly learnt that Chestnut, farm-raised girl that she is, came with both...
They were flat and in varying sizes, and the egg was lukewarm at best so I don't think they were mites. I'll have to wait until she lays her next egg and make more observations.
We just got a new hen the other day and yesterday she laid us an egg with dark spots on the shell. We assumed nothing out of the ordinary but when mum washed the egg the spots washed off!
What were these spots? Were they blood spots? Should we be worried?
We've DIY'd most things for our birds. Their food bowl started out life as a pot plant saucer, their grit dish an old cat litter box and their water bottle an old milk bottle with a chunk cut out. We even cut up a bit of floor linoleum to spread on the coop floor under their main pooping spot...
We're thinking of getting 3 hens in total, eventually. We're still pretty new to this so we thought it best to add one bird at a time and see how we go, plus we thought if we got 2 new chickens at once Peggy would be outnumbered (and bullied) or ignored. There's also the coryza to consider; if 2...
Definitely taking notes, thank you so much for all the advice! :hugs
I was especially concerned about where to draw the line with fighting/battle wounds, but I'll try to stay out it unless things get as dire as you said.
