You did Whuuut?

We've DIY'd most things for our birds. Their food bowl started out life as a pot plant saucer, their grit dish an old cat litter box and their water bottle an old milk bottle with a chunk cut out. We even cut up a bit of floor linoleum to spread on the coop floor under their main pooping spot (makes for easy cleanup!).
But the best DIY chicken thing is probably the laying box. Once upon a time, it was a huge, heavy-duty detergent bottle that a handy-man friend gave us. We spend ages washing it out to make sure it was clean of detergent (ironic, I know) and even longer sawing into the thick plastic to cut out the necessary hole. We had no proper tools, just hacked away using scissors, garden trimmers and an assortment of kitchen knives.

(That's our Australorp in the last pic. She looks a little pale in this pic because this was taken back when she was a little under the weather, but she's all better now.)

Not overly creative, but:
- a raised garden bed became a dust bath
- a scavenged small wooden dog house became the nest box (the roof lifts off for access)
- also scavenged wire closet shelving from an unfinished greenhouse for additional pest protection in front of our chain link fence gate, as it's difficult to completely cover up all gaps with hardware cloth. It works fairly well, I even caught a rat which had gotten stuck trying to crawl through the shelf-gate.

Those are all good ones!
And even better if it helped you catch a rat! :gig

So I'm doing a new addition on my coops, which is why I wanted other ideas.

I've made one of the coops from a pantry cabinet that I took out of my kitchen. It was built by the previous owner from furniture grade plywood (yea, expensive stuff), but when I took it apart, I saved the wood and haven't used it for anything else, so figured what the hell? :D
