    Roost size, shape, style?

My girls wouldn’t roost on the flat side of a 2X4. They were roosting on the floor, or the top roof beam. We had to turn them all around, and now they roost on them.

Ended Contest #3 Cutest Baby Fowl! - 10th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong

Not an entry, but this is my favorite pic of my son with our chicks back in the fall!

    Mites, Lice, or Early Molt?

Well this is my first flock and I want to make sure I’m doing it right! We’ve had enough issues from the crappy TSC coop, to birds not roosting, to birds climbing the tree and flying out of the fence, to jumping on the coop roof and escaping! I don’t want to cause any more issues that can be...

    Mites, Lice, or Early Molt?

Thank you! I’ll start giving them less worms! And shells on the side! I didn’t realize all that was so bad!

    Mites, Lice, or Early Molt?

My husband put the netting up near the ceiling (I guess he tacked it to the 2x4s or whatever is up there) to keep the girls away from the nails. He ran out of it though so he just bent the nails down in the middle part. He is planning on getting more tomorrow and putting all across the top under...

    Mites, Lice, or Early Molt?

Yes, we just didn’t consider that they would go all the way up there! And do you see the pic of the inside??? One of our little Rhode Island 3 month chicks is roosting higher up than all of our 8 month hens! The older hens chase them around outside during the day...not sure why they let them...

    Mites, Lice, or Early Molt?

They all moved in about a month ago. The littles were in there for a week before the bigs came in. Heres the pic I have. I’ll take pics of the inside tomorrow! Basically everything not painted is the inside part. We have 2 levels roosting bars on one side and one higher roosting bar on the...

    Mites, Lice, or Early Molt?

We just built it and moved them from their old coop into this one about a month ago. It’s about 4x8 or maybe 4x10. We moved the 4 little chicks (2months old at the time) in first and kept them in the run during the day while the big chicks were still in their old coop (which was a tractor supply...

    Mites, Lice, or Early Molt?

Haha, that’s our next problem. Many of them are now roosting our in the enclosed run up on a roof support beam. We’re putting netting up tomorrow because I’m afraid they’ll freeze in their sleep out there when it gets really cold! we didn’t think they’d try to get up there, or even try to roost...

    Mites, Lice, or Early Molt?

That makes sense. The grower feed has more protein than layer feed? Winter is starting here so I’m hoping their little necks don’t freeze!

    Mites, Lice, or Early Molt?

That’s kinda what I meant...I won’t have to do much but make sure they have protein for regrowth!

    Mites, Lice, or Early Molt?

They eat organic layer pellets. Usually there is a bunch of the shell left over in the bottom of the feeder so I always thought they just took what they wanted. They didn’t seem to take any when I had it on the side. I can try that again. For treats they get veggie scraps and some scratch...

    Mites, Lice, or Early Molt?

Thanks!!! I will check tonight. Definitely haven’t seen anything during the day, so this will help. I really hope it’s just a moly, since that would be the easiest “fix” but I’m just so caught off guard that it would happen at 8 months!

    Mites, Lice, or Early Molt?

Thank you! I have been giving them dried mealworms every day this winter...do you think that’s enough protein? My reds are still laying almost everyday so I’ve been trying to keep their protein up. I also add oyster shell to their feed.

    Mites, Lice, or Early Molt?

I have 6 hens who are 8 months old. The 2 Ameracaunas and 2 black sex links are both loosing feather on the backs of their necks for the past 5 days. It’s not bald to the skin. The quills are sticking out about one to two inches. I can’t find anything moving on them, like lice or mites. My 2...
