You’re probably right and I’m overreacting. It’s just that until now there were 5 of them, and they were obviously all snuggling under mum’s wings of a night. Now all of a sudden there’s only 3 and no mum. I just don’t want to lose any more.
This is my temporary night time setup - dog crate with covered cat litter box inside, thick layer of wood shavings to nest in, set up in front of the heater. Wish me luck.
We had a clutch of 5 chicks, hatched by a hen and living in the yard with their mum. Chicks are just over 4 weeks old. This afternoon mum and 2 chicks were killed in a dog attack, 3 chicks survived. Our daytime temperatures are currently 17-22 degrees (62-72 Fahrenheit), with nighttime minimums...
Wattles and combs still look slightly dull to me. They are very skittish and run away whenever I get close, so don’t know about the squatting. I wouldn’t be so impatient if it wasn’t for all our other hens going off the lay simultaneously.
Winter is mild - overnight temps can drop to 0 Celsius, but that’s rare. Daytime temps are usually between 12-18 Celsius.(32, 55-65 F for the Americans on here)
Last year we hatched some chicks, of which we kept 2 and integrated them into our existing flock of 6 chickens. The chicks hatched in early November, so are now over six months old, but so far no sign of any eggs. They are a Marans and a Barnevelder x Marans respectively.
Any advice on when we...
We have a chicken that has gone broody for the 4th time in 6 months. Is this normal?
I’ll give you a bit of background. We bought chicks around this time last year and they all started laying just before 6 month of age. One of them went broody within 4-6 weeks of starting to lay and we managed...
The one egg that pipped first got trampled mid hatch. However, today we have 6 confirmed chick sightings from the remaining 7 eggs. Not sure what's happening with the last egg, as mum is very fierce and scary.
I am dying to know what’s happening with our eggs. I haven’t heard or seen anything since the brief glimpse at yesterday’s pipped egg, so I have no idea if that chick has hatched, is still hatching or something else altogether. This is killing me!
One of our cats is scared of the chickens, the other one sleeps underneath their coop and dustbathes with them. The cats were here first, but it only took the chickens flapping their wings and having a go at the cats a couple if times to sort out the pecking order. My cats pare desexed -...
