I recently took in a calll duck. I stupidly didn’t think about the three rescue ducks I have that are a mixed Muscovy and are sterile due to the mix. They are very large! I’m afraid to let the little call drake duck out of a pen because one of those sterile maybe hermaphrodite (?) ducks likes to...
Options:
1. Put the chickens that are likely Marek's carriers in the coop since the weather will be cold and rainy which will be better for the chickens but will the 6 chicks survive either from being pecked at by other chickens or higher viral load?
2. Leave them outside and cross my fingers...
Just want to add that prior to the egg hatch, I had cleaned out the coop and put new hemp bedding. I also used unactivated oxide in there yesterday (a week later due to waiting on it to arrive).
I have two coops, one is very small as it was not supposed to be a chicken coop. There is a rooster and now down to three hens in there. There used to be more but I have random losses that I believe are due to Marek's. The other coop is much larger and easily houses a dozen chickens or more...
Well it’s morning and the two hens showed up. I’m guessing they flew over when the rooster was doing whatever he did to get hurt? He’s looking better today. I put Vetericyn on it last night. I have to let them in their uncovered run due to the hen with chicks about to hatch.
I’m very worried about that - the return. I’m daylight, I’ll check fence but I saw nothing and it would be hard to get past dogs. I keep thinking owl but two? Then tried for the roo?
Does running fishing line across deter flying predators? Definitely way too big for netting. I think I need to keep all chickens in for awhile. The problem is the coop with the missing chickens is smaller and there is a hen brooding and due any moment now. I’m afraid one of the hens or rooster...
Thank you for being there! I have two dogs that roam and protect but at that hour, they may have been napping. They stay up all night. People could never get there without the dogs losing it. I was hoping the rooster injury might be a clue? I’m leaning towards owl, especially because I thought I...
Doesn’t it figure I am home literally all the time during quarantine but leave for a few hours and chickens go missing. I was gone from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. I came home and checked on the chickens. I have two separate fenced in coops. I had let the right side one free range as I do many days...
I am curious if you ever figured out the black yolk thing. I got one yesterday while all the rest were fine. No smell - I don't think. I unfortunately cracked it in with about a dozen others (my bad) and quickly through the whole pan out. So gross! Now I'm worried about eggs I've given to...
The mother hen is doing a great job of keeping it warm under her. It's also very warm and humid out. Can they sleep with beak closed and see no visible movement? Just a few hours ago, he was fine!
The first pip was seen yesterday morning at 6:30 AM under a broody hen. Nothing further until this morning (25 hours later). The hole enlarged all day and I could see the beak moving (right where hole is) and cheeping. It is now 36 hours since initial pip and I don't see the chick moving. I...
Thank you for understanding. How did you move the whole nest? She’s basically sitting in a small attached box with pine shavings in it. She seems to be a good mom. Hasn’t moved in days. Can I leave everyone out for the night safely? It’s covered and fenced but not set up for sleeping and animals...
I have a broody hen laying on 2 eggs that I know are doing well. One is suspected to hatch tomorrow so I’m not touching it. The trouble is that the hen is in the nesting box all 19 chickens use and it’s a foot off the ground. I can’t move her and the eggs safely at this point. I closed all the...
First timer on brooding hens. We didn’t realize two hens were laying and not sure how old but I’m concerned because the boxes they chose didn’t have much for shavings and many eggs are dirty. Can they survive? Anything I should do? I also have a video I’d like someone to look at and see if they...
