Wry neck and not a big busted bird.

H Hi there. No her crop is fine. Her head is held really far back, she wasn't walking round much or venturing along ramps or into the dust bath like the other silkies do. She would lose her balance easily, so was either hesitant or unable to do much. Her neck doesn't feel twisted. I have to...

Wry neck and not a big busted bird.

The feeders contain layers pellets, the 2nd has mixed seed and corn, the next is chick mash for my three 7 week old silkies, then a dish of chickens gravel and shell. Her crop is fine, I keep an eye on all my hens for this since my warren 'CHOW CHOW' had a blocked crop. I cured that eventually...

Wry neck and not a big busted bird.

My hen Nugget had been looking strange to me. I thought she was becoming heavy breastfed, ignorant I know but I'm a fledgling and still finding my feet as far as chicken keeping goes. I decided I wasn't happy with how she looked and started researching and came across wry neck! She was becoming...

Review by 'MRS McKlucky' in article 'Cleaning and storing fresh eggs'

Really interesting article. I wasn't aware of the 'bloom' properties and even though I've worked in a butchers for 17years selling eggs, I had no idea they have 30 days to get the eggs to the store before the 'best before' date gets stamped on the carton with another 30 days! Thank for the info.

    Why not spoil them?

Actually, it reminds me of a time when we went camping with our in-laws. We were cooking bacon outside the tents. Suddenly my brother-in-law got up and started running. We eventually realized he'd been mugged by a chicken, it had nicked his bacon out of his sandwich, yet his was trying to get it...

    Why not spoil them?

I think it's just because we are used to chickens being shown either eating seed or just seeing them clucking around, not the wild eating machines that love to hunt that we end up with.:D

    Why not spoil them?

Anvia, 4 of my 5 cats would fight them for it, but I have one who couldn't be arsed to give chase....too lazy.

Review by '' on item 'Silkie'

I like your article. I became the proud owner of a white silkie and partridge silkie(Nugget and Pom Pom) they are quite shy but friendly. I'd just like to add that they can't see past their face feathers, so I trim my girls facial plumes which helps them be less skittish as they can see and...

    Why not spoil them?

I haven't got a good reason as such. I think I'm still getting around the misconception that chickens only eat grains and vegs. However, in the wild they'd eat meat like mice etc as caught by a Roo, but most meat bought by humans has been given antibiotics and messed with. Fruit and veg even...

Review by 'MRS McKlucky' in article 'Chicken Treat Chart: The Best Treats for Backyard Chickens'

Our hens get almost everything on the list except meat and cooked eggs. We do mixed baked egg shell however. I love seeing their dirty faces when they've face planted their treat. Seeing a silky with a dirty face is funny, but you have to wash their face clean... Then the yolks on you. (sorry...

    Chicken keeping, 5 months on.

Well, our coop doesn't look new or as prestine any more. It's a bit dusty and well loved and used already. Hae Hae, Daisy, Clucky, Chow Chow and Melissa are all fit and healthy and look happy. Hae Hae and Daisy got broody, I broke Daisy's broodiness but we gave in to Hae Hae(she didn't give up)...

Review by 'MRS McKlucky' in article 'Dust bathing – Why, where and how? Keeping your flock clean and happy.'

I like the simple idea of the homemade all weather dust bath. It is an idea we will probably pinch ready for autumn and winter. Mine love potting compost. They love sun bathing in it as well.

    Why not spoil them?

We put out in gravity feeders. .. pellets, mixed corn, grit and chick mash for the chicks but obviously the big hens love it too. Every day we share out either a whole brocoli or 500gm of grapes, or half a water melon, mashed potatoes with coli, broc, green beans, pears, apples, kale, spinach...

Our first ever attempt at a coop and run.

We decided to re-purpose our custom built green house but didn't know as to what to do. We then hit on the idea of starting to keep chickens. After some research to be sure we were up to the task, my other half set about transforming it into a new home for hens. We set up in March this year with...

    New chicken keeper

Hi. I'm Shell. Me and Rou my OH sort of tricked one another into starting our new chicken family at the end of February this year. He had built a green house that he'd covered in heavy duty plastic and mesh so that our 5 cats couldn't scratch it, 2 years previous. It's a nice 10x6. So without...
