Hello all I'm relatively new here We got some chicks from someone outside of Bangor and have just realized we most likely have 5 roosters and 2 hens so I'm on the hunt for a few more hens and a home for a little mixed bantam rooster (we are keeping one rooster, giving away the bantam and the...
I'm not sure if we would get chicks big enough fast enough, the cool weather in most years starts right around labor day. I've been hunting tonight on local swap boards seeing who had what for chicks -- most are offering roos though but I am hoping I can find a few girls to add.

I think we will keep him, he is the nicest (the black and white one is mean, the brown and black one is skittish and , and the red one is getting mean, the whitish/gray one seems fine though). That big guy follows my husband around the yard all day waiting for him to uncover treats...
So by that count we probably have 5 roos and 2 hens! I guess we'll be keeping one roo for the winter then so the girls have company and everyone can stay warm in the coop this winter. I should really hunt around for someone looking to give away some hens or something shouldn't I? I worry two...
We got these chicks from a gentleman who had 100+ chickens these are just the fertile eggs he collects and then hatches. So no clue on what they are but would love some guidance. I am looking for guesses on what breeds they may be and sex.
I will tell you my guesses as for who is a hen and...
We have one chick that we have nursed along. His leg is all crooked and we've done what we can for him, he's been separate for a week now because the other chicks were picking on him. Yesterday I noticed he was limping far worse then usual and today he will barely put his bad foot on the...
Just wanted to report back that I went and gave them back their food this morning at 5am (they were downstairs making a racket for their food). Checked them all out before I put the food back and their crops were nice and soft. Silly chickens think they are piggies with all they ate yesterday...
As we were cleaning out the brooder today I was handling all of the chicks like I normally do and I noticed all of them have very hard crops, about the size of a regular bouncy ball but not that solid. Should I worry? They are about 4ish maybe 5ish weeks old (hard to say the guy we bought them...

3rd. pic, top left...Don't be surprised when you see all of them tussling and chest bumping. It's just one of the things they do as they are sorting out the pecking order.
Oh good he was the one I had pegged as a rooster and I used him to compare to the larger ones and looking at...
Which one do you think is the rooster? I actually suspect there are three roosters in the group. One of the gray ones (with the gray chest) and the black larger speckled one both make a slightly different noise and have been trying to fight each other (flying at each other with their legs up...
Okay back with pictures -- sorry it took a bit it's been a long long day here today.
Not the best lighting as they are in the basement and it was raining so I couldn't bring them outside but hopefully you can see well enough.
This is the chick with the bad leg, but I notice today she is...
We are just starting and we were having a hard time finding good purebred chickens so we decided to go with some chicken mutts for now while we search some more (my 5yo wants to show them in 4-H eventually so we have time). The guy we bought them from has 100+ chickens a mix of BR, australops...
Thank you!
Right now our plan is to house them with the chickens and let the ducks out when we are in the yard (I am out in the yard most of the day really, when it is nice). They would have access to the water (kind of a smallish very shallow pond) part of it is on our land and part is on the...
We have a serious mosquito problem here. Pat of the issue is that there is a small pool of water year round right next to our backyard and the buggers breed there all summer long. At the height of mosquito season our backyard is almost unusable because there are so many. We are getting...
Hello all I just joined today. The chicken coop and chickens (not coming for a bit yet) are my birthday present from my husband this year. I have wanted chickens for years and spent most of my childhood begging my parents for chickens so I am beyond excited.
We plan to get a dozen chicks in...
