Ditto, I feed fresh, do not freeze, chickens go crazy for the wiggling worms. They disappear within seconds of feeding.
I give my meal worms sliced potatoes and they are all over them immediately. I make sure there is plenty of air...not a closed container...that keeps down the mold...
My 16 hens are 2 years old, Buff Orpington, Sex Links, Silver Laced Wyandotte, Easter Egger, Barred Rocks. We have had 100 degree temps for over 30 days; they are housed in a coop for now that is partially screened, have 2 fans, a sandbox that I wet down, a 3 gallon wading pool, water at all...
We have been in the 100's for over 60 days; YES the chickens have a fan on them and even with the fan it is still very hot in their coop so they have tub from TSC where I put fresh water at least twice a day and float ice blocks. They are a hoot...they will stand in line to have an opportunity...
Never got around to having my flock tested; just sold eggs from my house. Recently moved and may try to sell at Farmer's Market. Does anyone know who I need to contact about testing in Tom Green County, Texas?
My box of large worms has lots of pupae every day now. I've put 40 to 50 in the beetle box in the last week. Cool to find one that is shedding his worm skin. Found a new beetle in the large worm box...missed that pupae.
I found small worms in my beetle box so I screened that box and put all...
I started mealworms in August using two small tubs of worms from PetsMart that supposedly contained 50 worms each but when I counted before putting in them in the aquarium I discovered there were only about 25 live worms in each tub. Used chick starter, carrots and potatoes.
Recently I decided...
I have a buck just like the white with the eye rings. He has a heart shaped ring around both eyes and a tear drop under one eye with a few spots on his back and a line on his spine. He is small...definitely not a rex...normal fur. Billy the Kid is quite a lil character; we rescued him at the...
Wow! I found something they love! I went out to feed the chickens their 2 daily pumpkins and picked up the rind that was left from yesterday's feeding. Brought the shell of 1/2 of one pumpkin in and cut into small 2 to 3 inch squares and put under the lids I have in the larvae box (they...

I have a box that just has beetles in it...thought I would date it so I know when they may have begun to lay eggs. That way I can tell how long it took til I see larvae. Plan to do the same with the pupae. Once a box is no longer producing larvae, I can use it to put pupae in and...
I wondered about the the number of instars in the larval stage listed considering how tiny the larvae are at hatching. I think I will put the pupae in their own container to keep anything from disturbing them.
I was looking tonight and was amazed at how much frass is in the colony box...
Found website that had this chart with # of days for each stage and # of molts they go through. I have lots of small exoskeletons in my first colony/aquarium with the frass where I'm letting the tiny mealworms grow enough so I can shift them out and place with the older worms. Hopefully all of...

Problem is it is the front door to our house so visitors have a funny reaction to whatever I have living/growing on the porch at the time. I tell people since I'm officially into my 'senior years' that I'm having my 'second childhood' with animals/plants/etc. I never got to have...

....I have 5 rabbits on my front enclosed porch at the moment waiting for my husband to get the rabbitery built. Last Spring I had 22 chicks in brooders on that porch. It faces south and has windows on two sides. Previous Springs I used it as a greenhouse to start my...

Good to know...I'm always looking for something good to add to our soil. Currently layering mulched leaves and rabbit poo or chicken poo in Rubbermaid containers til I can get another compost pile built.
I posted on FreeCycle that I needed bagged leaves...made out like a bandit...
Yesterday I put a folded damp paper towel in one of the colonies. Today I found that the worms had crawled between the folds. Today we emptied a 3lb margarine carton which is not recyclable so I took the lid and put the folded damp paper towel on it so it does not touch the bedding and cause...
Christmas morning I decided the mealworms needed feeding and while I was at it I ran my fingers through the chick starter. I was surprised to see lots of movement and found LOTS of mealworms of various sizes...some large enough to feed and others that were very tiny plus new beetles had...
Mike,
Thank you for your loving, giving spirit; may it is be an inspiration to many during these difficult times in our nation.
I pray that God will bless you in the coming New Year and you are able to continue sharing your eggs with those with various needs.
I'm slowly getting geared up...
