    Rescue hen no feather growth

Thank you for your suggestions. I will definitely try the tuna. They have oystershells for extra calcium. I did not know it is fine to give a higher protein food to hens that are laying. I knew to supplement during molt. That is why she is separate for a few hours, to eat extra protein. I will...

    Rescue hen no feather growth

Hello, I would like some advice. Last November I adopted 3 commercial laying hens so they would not be culled. Two barely had feathers on back, bottom and legs. They kept laying daily, but did not seem to grow new feathers. I put supplements in their water and one started growing feathers. She...

Hen has crooked neck. Injury / illness?

Picky she is indeed! She hardly ate anything with the vitamins on. She did get fed up with me, her strange tasting food, her separate sleeping house and run. While opening her door she jumped out and I could not catch her again. She decided to go back to her flock who chase her a bit and then...

Hen has crooked neck. Injury / illness?

The vit e is working but slowly. She is a bit picky with food so it is hard to give her the full dose. Will try to put it on mealworms, I am sure she can't resist! Her head is halfway up now, upwards and onwards . Thank you so much for the advice.

Hen has crooked neck. Injury / illness?

Sorry typo. I got vitamin E and B complex. She had both today. Yesterday I let her in the big run for a while but as soon as the bossy hen saw her she was on top pecking the sick hen. The run she is in is a smaller run inside the big run so she can see everyone. She is timesaring with our...

Hen has crooked neck. Injury / illness?

Thank you so much! I will buy vit A and selenium this morning (am in the UK). She very keen to eat and drink and is very able to do so. I will put her in a separate run where she can see her sisters but is safe. Hopefully this will do the trick. Is she in pain? I will let you know how she is doing.

Hen has crooked neck. Injury / illness?

Three days ago I found my bantam leghorn standing at the side of the burn with her neck fully tilted, head upside down. I thought she was attacked but no skin was broken. She may have flown away from our frisky drake and landed awkwardly. I took her in, let her settle. I tried to get her to...

    Wishful Thinking?

My 4 runners (2 drakes, 2 females) were hatched by my 2 chicken hens last year. 3 were raised by the hens and I had to raise 1 drake because he was too weak after birth. The hens did not accept him later on. Now both drakes (Drake and Muts) are best mates. Maybe because Drake likes ducks and...

    Flock of 2 with issues

I was afraid it would come to that. I will let you know what we will do. They are very pretty. I always joked that the dominant one had mental health problems. You never knew how she would react: friendly, paranoid, outright panicky, greedy, shy, feared. Maybe i was not too far off the mark. No...

    Flock of 2 with issues

Thank you for your reply. When they were broody they both fought and starting to damage each other (pulling feathers, breaking skin). This went on for a week until it got more vicious. We thought separating until the broody hormones subsided would help. Now it is very clear bullying. The moment...

    Flock of 2 with issues

We have two black Leghorn bantams and they fight. The dominant hen basically kicked the other hen out of the house. This started when both were broody and both wanted to sit in the same nest. We had to separate them. One is still in the chicken coop and run. The other is sleeping in the duck...

    UK Members Please Say HI

I am a new member too. We are in the Scottish Borders. I think the ducks are having the best time in the pond while the chickens, dogs and cats are out for the count in the shade. It is 28 degrees here in sunny Scotland.

    New Runner duck mum

I am new here and this is my first post. I am Dutch but live in the Scottish Borders. Thank you for all your advice about raising ducks. It really helped with all my questions after our hens hatched 4 Indian Runner ducklings last year. Especially since I had to raise one myself (Muts). Our...
