Broody hen should have a baby

So here is the thing... My 1.5yr old Australorp has been broody for two weeks now. And it's not so much that I want to add to my 5 hen flock, as much as she deserves a result for her effort. I'm considering slipping under her *a single, *female, *day old chick (young as possible) *at...

    Feeding flies to chickens

I know this post is ages old in internet time, but... Me too! (To the 1st post.) I had a bug zapper but my set up wasn't ready. NOW zapper lights up and isn't killing them. New one too spendy. Want to provide feast, but not worried about amount of flies. Trying "DIY fly bucket trap" again this...

What are your tricks to beat the heat?

I went after dark to lock up the chicks in run/coop tonight and noticed them panting. And of course they're all squashed together on the roost! I offered them a pan of water and they looked at me like i was crazy! During the day i give them ice (with a few treats frozen in). I froze leftover...

DIY chicken feeder - 90° PVC, 5gal bucket

OK, so it sounds like I'll eventually get a 3" in my feeder. I DO have vertical water nipples! Two each in two five gallon buckets. And i recently put one on cinder blocks instead of handing, and its golden! I am experimenting with hanging the food bucket to see if it would help keep pests out...

    Ordered some horizontal water nipples.

FYI i got my vertical chicken nipple/5gal water on two blocks TODAY! The spacing is tight because its a limited surface area and was already assembled with hanging in mind. But it just worked. I used a full cinder block (perpendicular to nipple placement on bucket) under a half block the bucket...

    Chickens can't find way out!

We HAVE had success! Pieces of a discarded water stand are serving as two crude steps. Then dirt, scattered sunflower seeds...and we have footprints(?Chick prints?) I think the majority of confusion was which way was out. Brand new digs, no worn path and a different way into the run that they...

    Chickens can't find way out!

I considered more hardware cloth...already used a bit chicken wire, so security is already compromised. And money. A lot of issues concerning door (and materials)- but thats a different thread. Mine is a urban coop, a fenced in backyard. Will definitely look in to wide steps to transition levels

DIY chicken feeder - 90° PVC, 5gal bucket

Here's my question: How big does a hole need to be for a chicken to stick its head into?? I LOVE diy chicken stuff. (As long as its not MORE complicated or inconvenient.) I settled on a 90° pvc pipe into a bucket of feeder....BUT a 2" pvc is all i could do. (My biggest drill bit is two inches...

    Chickens can't find way out!

I swear, there is a chicken in the picture!...her name is Rory, welsummer, lowest in the pecking order of the three chick flock. Also, my chicks don't seem to get LADDERS. (Which could add to problem here)

    Ordered some horizontal water nipples.

Err..duh. I have cinder blocks somewhere and didn't even think of that! I tried screwing WOOD together and that was a problem. Just need it high enough with a limited surface area....Thank you!

    Chickens can't find way out!

Ok its one foot/ twelve inches up and down to the existing system...but there is a ladder. There is also a different chicken in there now! Probably pecking flax seed and sunflower seeds i put in to seed (Yes, they both will seed, i have tested) there is still shade currently. and water.

    Chickens can't find way out!

So...I added to my run with a repurposed (tall) dining table and chicken wire on the sides and bottom. First chicken to explore the run did it in the heat of the day AND COULDN'T FIND HER WAY OUT! It IS six inches lower than their usual run and in an area that was previously uncontained...

    Ordered some horizontal water nipples.

I should add: when they were in brooder i used a bike water bottle holder, a plastic jar and one vertical nipple. They caught on super quick. I am first-time chick owner. Beginners luck?

    Ordered some horizontal water nipples.

I use the "other" water nipples, but struggle hanging 5 gallons (50 lbs!) for my chicks. I have been considering horizontal nipples also. So I'll be watching to see how it goes for you! BTW I've tried supporting from the bottom but so far stands i have built are rickety and more dangerous than...

    I'm new!

I'm brand-stinking new to chicks! I acquired a Sapphire gem, Americana, and Welsummer from Hoover Hatchery via our True Value in Yakima, Washington. So, like i said, three. Beyonce, Jenny and Rory. Back in May. Found this site through googling on internet. But now i'm finding references to...

    Sapphire Gem

I have a S. Gem, Beyonce! (See author Jenny Lawson for name explaination.) Beyonce basically looks like the picts above. It is dusk here so can't take an actual pic. Coloring is basically gray and black feathers, pink and black wattle and black comb emerging. I'm new to chicks and she's two...
